I went to a Mac 'road show' about a year ago and they were demoing all sorts of interesting music production software (as well as plugging the G5). I heard a program that sounded like a real stand up bass with fingers sliding up and down the strings and everything... I forgot the name of it - does anyone know what it could be ?

I'd also check http://www.kvraudio.com

It smells like a RTAS/DirectX/VST instrument to me, but the site also lists standalone apps.

Personally I think Groove Agent is a criminal offence, but Broomstick Bass is quite fun.

However, like any other autoplaying "instruments" this one will make you hate it after 5 hours of intense use. Supposedly you can get around the auto/loop shit though.

This demo mov explains the lot.

Listen to those bass patterns used in the demo. Who would ever use anything like that? Hello?!?

I've been looking at all of the links and info on kvraudio.com I almost forgot what I was looking for!
Ah maybe that was it, the virtual bassist. I think that was it actually. I will keep looking and post whatever I find, but in the meantime I'm going to rummage through all of these links and sample libraries.
Thanks a lot for your help guys!
