The DoubleDeka Ultrasonic VCO Subject description: Get on the bus! |
 |
|
The DoubleDeka is my new VCO. From the forthcoming documentation:
"This unique VCO consists of an ultrasonic oscillator core followed by a parallel pair of waveform generators.
Each waveform generator consists of a switched multi-octave divider followed by circuitry to generate a 10-step
waveform using a set of 10 slider potentiometers. Also included are a novel synchronization circuit with two
different operating modes and a built-in "digital ring modulator" (DRM) for producing a wide variety of
synchronized and anharmonic sounds. The oscillator core is highly stable (better than 20 ppm/K in the
prototype) and features wide-range, accurate tracking (better than 0.05% over fifteen octaves). The variable
waveform generator provides fine control over an enormous range of available timbers."
PCBs have been tested and will be available -- along with kits and panels -- from bridechamber.com.
For now here are some demos:
demo01 -- switching through the octaves and then moving the sliders around.
demo02 -- with fixed waveforms, switching through all the combinations of the octave switches.
demo03 -- a patch with the two waves fed through two VCFs.
demo04 -- four waves from two units; raw sounds without filtering.
demo05 -- sweeps of a Tri VCO fed into the the sync input (two sync modes) and then into the RM input.
(Sheesh, they were in the correct order in the preview. Has anybody figured out how the ordering works?)

Sounds great Ian - especially like #3
Apart from the 10 step waveform generator, does this circuit have much in common with your one in Electronotes? or has it been implemented in a different way?
I still have that rack of 10 sliders awaiting a new home |

Prety much totally different. The core uses the LM331 V/F converter, specifically the high frequency version in the data sheet. The logic is all CMOS (as opposed to TTL) and so has a higher level of integration. The sync and DRM are new, and took some work to get to operate well.
The boards that will be available have the sliders and their drive circuits on one board and everything else on the other. This means that you would have to use the same slider as we are in order to use the board effectively. You could use other sliders, but then you would need all flying leads from the board to the pots. Not necessarily bad, just a bit more work.

Server seems good now, so your wish is fulfilled...
This is an interesting VCO indeed! _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

are there schematics on the bridechamber page? |
The schematics will probably be available eventually. But Scott is going to have a large tooling charge to make the panel, so I want to make sure he doesn't get undercut by anyone, if you know what I mean.
It's really a pain to mount and wire up 20 sliders. I would strongly encourage folks to use the boards and panels from Scott if at all possible.

I'll trade the holes for the sliderrs for what's behind door #2, Monty.
Seriously, it sounds very cool - I want 2! |

I'm thinking the core would be up in the BBD clocking range, no? _________________ My Site |

Done with love and reverence, you'll want it. Done with bad intent, you're helping to hurt the very thing that you love.
This oscillator is a welcome addition to oscillator lore, and a grand step above mere sawtooth core designs. I'd drop in 741s and a mylar cap in the core, but that's just me _________________ We are selling emotions, there are no emotions in a grid. -mwagener

im already making room for atleast two and assuming it utilizes a 4017 ill be making a slight modification... a switch to reset the 4017 after atleast the 6th and 8th steps if this goes into the lfo range ive got myself some synchorized sequencers |

Juju is a guitar dominated Nigerian style of pop music. Even though I've two great Juju records by Ebenezer Obey from the 1960s I think the DoubleDeka can do without. |

The core goes up to a bit over 100 kHz. Scott D. wants to bring the HF out to the panel, and we will probably do so. Anyway, the highest fundamental frequency that can be used is around 10 kHz. If you really need to go higher, you can split the waveforms up into two equal five step segments -- this works fine because you can't much in the way of harmonics above that.

Sweet - you could drive a two phase clock driving a BBD. It just gets better and better.
An MN3X07 would get up to 5.12 ms, which would put you in some fairly decent comb filter range.
It's a magic bus..... _________________ My Site |

Sure, why not. You're making my point. If you start with something stable you can always degrade it if you want. But not vice versa.
Moog used his excellent ears as part of his design process. He also used other musicians'. I have no argument whatever with anyone who wants to use his originals.
