How much do you think sex has to do with peoples' love of synthesizers? Are these machines phallic symbols?

What about all those nobs? Nipples?
What about all those toggle switches?
What about all those male and female plugs and jacks?
What about the sliders?
What about fondling the machines' erogenous zones to get it to make noise?

Why are there so few women synthesizer players?
Why are there so few women who attend electronic music concerts?

I can see some sexual overtones to all of this. I suppose car enthusiasts have a similar infatuation with their stuff. I do know that the more I work on music, the less interested in sexual things I become. OH! Did I just say that? Ooooops!

I know that FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions but what I don't know
(and haven't seen in any FAQ) is how it is pronounced orally: Fack or
Eff-Aie-Que? Since many (most?) of the acronyms on the net seem to be
pronounced rather than spelled out, my bet is that its Fack. Any definitive
answer to this?

The commonly accepted pronunciation is a compromise: two letters are sounded
as if they were forming a syllable and the third letter is named: it is 'fuh
queue'.

That's not only how it's tongued when it stands for "frequently asked ques-
tion." When it means a compilation of frequently asked questions and their
answers, that's 'fuh queue' too.

I remember those Roth cartoons, but I haven't seen them or thought of them since 1963. Amazing. When I was like in the 10th grade, this was the type of thing the talented guys were drawing during classes when they were supposed to be paying attention. There were lots of airbrushed tee shirts in this style. This stuff disappeared when the hip movement started to appear in '65. In those days, culture changed a lot in just one year.

Still, I was very serious about this sex topic, but I'm not sure what I expected. Certainly not all this! Rolling Eyes

Perhaps some intellectual psychological analysis is in order, or at least some random thoughts.

The strong rock beat is very much connected with sexual rhythms. The same can be said for the earlier jazz music. These beats sound primitive and dated nowadays. Recent trends in beat oriented electronic music have been exhibiting erratic beats and rhythms. We have used the term intelligent dance music. Dance is a form of socially accepted foreplay. Intelligent music implies that there is not any sexual based dance underpinnings. Maybe this indicates that we are becoming disembodied; unsexed. We spend more time with computers than with physical people. We use the computers for communication. According to a friend who is in the ISP business, more than half of the traffic on the network is sexual stuff, much more. Maybe our music is more related to the cybernetic world than to the physical (sexual) world. I've heard women on American daytime TV complain that their husbands spend all their time with porn on the computer and don't have sex with them. Anyone seen any groupies around space music bands?

Back in the 60s, the bands played "wild" rock music and the girls got excited and started dancing suggestively and taking off their clothes. (I'm thinking San Fransisco in 1965 Smile - maybe this didn't happen much in Iowa.) While I never got any, there was good reason to suspect that people were having sex shortly after the concerts, if not during them. At a recent rock concert I attended there was no dancing at all; maybe an occasional head nod; certainly no stripping. I don't know about the sex, but it didn't look promising for many of the guys there. Very disappointing. Crying or Very sad

Hey, the first electronic music star, Walter Carlos, turned out to be a woman! Rolling Eyes What does that say? Sexual ambiguity? Huh?

When I was a younger man, I attracted more attention from the women when I played the banjo than when I played the apparently much sexier Moog Modular.

Nowadays, even the sexual knobs and patch cords of our beloved synthesizers are going away, replaced by images on the screen activated by the mouse. I understand there are sex programs pretty much like this, although I've never actually seen one.

Well, as the topic is steered back to the cerebral...

I don’t know. I think that within music in general there is has traditionally (for quite awhile at least) been a divide between dance-oriented music and non-dance oriented music, and the sexuality tends to have always been related to the dance side of the aisle, be it in jazz, rock, electronic, whatever. I don’t recall seeing any flashing at a Rush concert.

However, I think that there has developed an increased level of "sensuality" to the mind and a sensualization of non-sexual aspects of human thought and experience that may rival the raw sexual side of human nature, and has been brought about, at least to a respectable degree, by the use of drugs and mind/consciousness-altering influences on the body and brain. Whether we're talking hallucinogens or sensory deprivation tanks or whatever, there seems to be an increased interest in developing new forms of elation and ecstasy within one's immediate experience that could be seen as a substitute for, perhaps even an upgrade from, raw sexuality. Instead of feeding the instinctive imperative towards propagation, there is a shift towards feeding the human imperatives of progress and advancement, facilitated by thought. Thought music, intended to sensualize the act of thought, and I am willing to bet there is some form of esoteric brain-chemistry involved in this. I think it's wonderful myself, but then, I’ve always found the orgy-esqué nature of popular music fairly repugnant. I don't know, I'm a weirdo. Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov were my childhood heroes.
