Welcome
to the first annual Digital Modular Synthesizer event to be held at The London College of Music and Media at Thames Valley University on the 26th-28th of June 2002. This unique event celebrates the creativity and wizardry which surrounds the music and artistry of modular systems from around the world. The event will include talks, workshops, concerts and special demonstrations.
In this papers you will find interviews and links to the active participants of the festival. These give a rare insight into the creative process behind the electronic artforms presented at this festival.
Systems represented this year will be: Nord Modular, Sync Modular, Max/Msp, Csound, Reaktor, VAZ, Pure Data, Kyma, and will include software for the Linux OS presented by
Steve Harris. A special featured system this year will be the VAZ Modular created by genius Martin Fay. Martin will present his system to other users and talk about it's singular features. Windows users are very lucky indeed. Josep Comajuncosas interview turns out to be a masterclass in effective instrument design.A unique guest this year is
Rob Hordijk from The Hague. Rob is a Nord Modular programmer par excellence with a unique insight and ability. Robs workshops are always electric and provide a singular spark of inspiration to those attending (at any level). Rob talks about his approach to sound design.Roland Kuit
also from The Hague will be giving a very special workshop on synth programming specially for dance and rhythm work. This man has a unique sound. Roland will also present " State of...Phase" on the thursday 27th evening. This is a work based on phase differences in musical phrasing and will include mixed media.Joker Nies from Cologne will provide an insight into the power and flexibility of the Kyma Capybara system. The brainchild of Symbolic Sound Corporation is one of the most intriguing synthesis, improvisation and processing tools of the 21th century.
Per Villez
will introduce a new hybrid oscillator type based on particle systems and Motion Control systems.Josep Comajuncosas will journey from Barcelona to show the incredible Sync Modular environment. Josep has developed some remarkable soft synths hosted by Sync Modular. Be sure to check out his Gong Explorer and TB303 filter emulations.
Harry Dawes will be performing the Theremin at the events concert. He will talk about his experiences of the history of electronic music in
Moscow.
Jan Punter's piece 'Work-34' will be presented on the friday 28th. This piece is composed of 95 patches, 48 Noodles, 9 parts, 1 piece - 7
hours and 1 minute, and also manged to drop in a slide show with 109 pictures.
Tim Blackwell
will demonstrate and perform his swarm intelligence improvising software.Other works at the concert will include pieces for computer animation by Johan Virtamo and Per Villez together with animation students from LCMM.
