Nice! You get the prize for first pic (besides mine).
It's so... blue... must... look... away... but can't... too... nifty...
Nice to see a Mankato take shape. Now I can't wait to see (hear) it in action.

The parts list and documentation is on it's way! One customer in The Netherlands got his board in just two days (sent via the same Air Mail service, go figure), so I'm glad to hear you got yours. Rev01s went to Germany, Netherlands, UK, Australia, and the US of A, so it's a very international board now.

Hey Brandon,
Heck yeah. You get a Rev02 board, and BTW, the REV02 boards are here! I'm just checking to make sure they behave okay. I've put one together (goes pretty fast when you have all the parts), and I've got it running. I have it oscillating for a while, and then running as a VCF for a while to burn it in. I just want to make sure the board AND the circuit behave okay. These look good so far. If everything checks out okay, the boards will go on sale in the next day or so.
For those of you not familiar with Brandon's deal, he's the guy who VERY graciously took the Mankato prototype up to the AH Cali show last year. Something came up that prevented me from going, so Brandon took the Mankato and hooked it up to his modular to show it off, making him an official "Friend of Magic Smoke." Maybe I'll have t-shirts printed up Oh, and I still have Brandon's Minimoog that I borrowed like a year ago. I've measured most of it and made a CAD model (and made some renderings that even fooled a few folks at Moog). But back on subject, we're saving a Rev02 for ya, Brandon.

Rev02 Boards Subject description: They're here |
 |

Dang, that was quick!
We're not quite ready to release them yet. Like I say, I want to make sure the layout and the circuit behave. I'm being a bit paranoid, but I really want people to be happy with these, and to make sure there are no hidden "gotchas." The first populated Rev02 is in burn in now, and it's behaving just fine, but I want to make sure there are no problems. I should know by tomorrow. I don't anticipate any problems, but then again, you NEVER anticipate problems - they just happen!
When these go on sale (I'll make an announcement), we take PayPal at magsmoke@gmail.com
Thanks to everybody for their patience. Hang in there just a little bit more, we're almost there!

Thanks for posting these samples! I was surprised out how squelchy the 18 dB output could sound! I've never heard that particular output before (that buffered tap was an addition put in by Magic Smoke).
Have you had any luck getting a 1V/Octave response yet? I had no problem on the breadboard getting that. I've got a Rev01 board, but haven't had a chance to grace it with a soldering iron yet I think Tim has had success with the 01, so he might chime in here.
Cheers,

Rev01 Mankato Subject description: Rev01 Samples |
 |

Hi Boys and Girls!
Hey Louis, nice samples! Now try using the Mankato as an LFO and modulating it with another LFO - I had all sorts of fun with that. One thing about the Mankie that I like is that the frequency goes high enough to really let all the higher harmonics come through. This produces a very buzzy sound that I don't get from many other VCFs, a real "snap" at the very beginning of an envelope if you have the mod level cranked up.
As far as the v/octave response, I haven't set mine precisely, but I've gotten pretty close simply by setting the trimmer to mid position (i.e. 5 turns on a 10-turn trimmer). I'll have to check this tonight, but I think we should be able to get you set up.

Awesome, I've got several projects on the bench at the moment, so no rush on my part, just wanted to get in on the list, if possible, thanks!

I think it may be creeping closer to two years, at this point, but who is counting? ;0) I'm not sure there's even a good place for it in the studio anymore, so hold on to it as long as there's still work to do on that model.[/i] |

i bought one from rsonline.de once - make sure it's the DIP version and not the SMD one. you can also try requesting a sample from AD. _________________ Sneak-Thief - raw electrofunk |

for some unclear reason rsonline does not want to make business with me. i also tried a sample from AD, but no answer yet. |

Neat! I like the first one, especially around 2:40 where it slows and gets a little funky, and the second sample with the drum box is AWESOME! I've had it playing in the background this morning while I'm working on a bunch of CAD drawings at Tesla. That sounds like some 6dB crunchiness if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for sharing!!

Great stuff, Louis. Thanks for taking the time to post all of that.
BTW: I know what "etaoin" means. Do I win anything?
Embarrasingly, I'm still waiting for a few parts, so I still don't have a functioning Mankato. Doh! Servo's got 2 -- or is it 3, now?

I'm sorry to say that you are mistaken, as it is the 18dB output on both
The drum box, by the way, is a humble Boss DR-220e. The only thing I have that can take sync pulses from the MFOS sequencer... _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |
