I'm back :) |
 |

...just wanted to say I've just bought a G2X -so I'm back in business.
Truth: You only notice how addicted you are once you don't have your fix.
Digital, analog, who cares... The G2 is so ridiculously flexible und so ridiculously easy to use... and I found out that I just couldn't be without it.
Another reason is that the tour I'm heading for has started rehearsals, and new musical requirements have cropped up there that can be tackled most conveniently with the G2: stuff like generating a click to the drummer and then having FX, sequences, LFOs synched up with it...
It's all cool this way -I was meaning to sell the G2s sometime to upgrade to the X anyway. I'm one of those folks to whom keyboards matter. And those 2 extra wheels are VERY usefull in performance!
And the digital nature of the G2 has opened up a completely new field of interest: patching "chaos theory" recursive formulas and sweeping though the coefficients. Fun.
Just wanted to let you know.
cheers,
tim |

Thanks for the kind replies.
As I say -I always planned on "upgrading" to the G2X someday, so moneywise nothing has been wasted.
I sold the G2 in a bout of analog purism, only to find out that I hadn't realised how much the modular approach had already influenced my way of thinking. Also the Clavia "morph assign" concept -you only notice how ridiculously practical that is once you go back to other synths. And now, with the 2 extra wheels, there's even more fun.
So, to add to Howards post about the G2 needing to be more expressive: I think it is incredibly expressive! The greatest thing, to me, is the marriage between the complexity of modularity and the simplicity of assigning performance controls to this complexity. Just hit the morph buttons and dial away.
You only notice how great it is once you do not have it anymore. I had that experience. |

Nice to see you back, Tim.
And now that you have got the G2X what's your opinion on the quality of the G2X keyboard in comparison with the G2? Do you experience any difference? _________________ Grtz Wan |

Oh yes, definetely. I wouldn't call the X keyboard "semiweighted" by any means, although it is declared as that. But nevertheless, I do feel a considerable difference -the X keyboard action is smoother and more gratifying to the fingers. It feels more reassuring and robust -less "clacky".
But I agree that it is a subtle difference and I can understand if maybe non-keyboardists will not notice it at all.
But performance-wise, the X is in a different league for me. With its 5-octave keyboard, I can take it along autonomoulsy on its own to any type of gig. With the G2, I always had to bring an additional MIDI keyboard too, because 3 octaves just ain't enough for two busy hands. That's not necessary anymore.
Another great thing for me is that the two extra wheels are available as morph groups directly from the front panel. This is so cool. Now you can use the modwheel for traditional vibrato, but add stuff like "dub style" delay feedback control to the performance too by assigning it to one of the extra wheels -which is also so easily done: just hit the morph source and dial away!
In a nutshell, I can understand the gripes expressed by the more experimentally inclined G2 users here, who think that the G2 interface is maybe geared too much towards a "conventional" performance mode. But for me, as a fully trained and active "conventional" performer, this is the most perfect match -I get the best of both worlds.
It's so perfect that I had to let my "analog purist" whinings subside and get back into business . |

Thanks for your opinion, i like the paradox between "considerable" and "subtle"
Your last line does say it all, it's just perfect for "conventional keyboardists". _________________ Grtz Wan |

Ooops , never mind. But actually this paradox describes the truth very well. The difference is somewhat subtle if you just pound on the keyboard superficially, but gets more noticeable when you start playing really nifty virtuosic stuff.
Subtleties can be considerably important in music. |
