This sub forum is for all things related to electro-music 2010, Sept 10 - 12, 2010, in Huguenot, NY. The web page for the event is:

http://event.electro-music.com

Create new topics as you feel appropriate. We will still have a participants email list which will be used for announcements for wide-range distribution, but we'd like to keep as much discussion here.

Hi Mosc- Im completely confused as to where my posts are going. If I want to send a message to THIS subforum but with a new topic, what do I do?

I have found that when I am on a forum such as "call for participation", which I guess is a subforum, and hit "new subject" the post I creat appears to be placed in the general forum....In any case I am definitely missing something! Wink

THanks,
-T

"call for participation" is a thread. "electro-music 2010" is a forum.
If you click on "new topic" you will create a new thread in the current forum.

OK, when you are viewing this topic, for example, you can click on "New Topic" - that is what you should do to start a new topic in this sub forum. It will show up in the same sub forum.

"Post Reply" will post another message in an existing topic.

A topic (also know as a thread) is a discussion with an initial post and replies from various members. A post is a message in a topic.

Our forum has lots of sub forums. This is good to keep things organized, but some people find it really hard to follow. This particular sub forum is under the electro-music.com sub forum, which is also confusing. The electro-music.com sub forum is for all things related to this site and the community.

Anyway, push "New Topic" and start a new topic/thread.

    ------------ aside -------------

Many people have pointed out the confusedness I just described and suggested ways to improve the hierarchy of our forums. The problems in changing things is and editor/moderator has to move each topic individually. We used to do this from time to time several years ago and it took hours. Now, it would be too tedious to contemplate, in most cases.

Still, we are always interested in hearing new ideas about improving the site. Of course, where would on post such a suggestion/request? Try this forum. http://electro-music.com/forum/forum-6.html

Tantroniq, I guess it would also be helpful to point out that the forum has two layers of sub-forums. Just like a tree with branches, we have the main trunk which is the forum itself, then we have several branches which are the sub-forums. These each have smaller branches growing from them which are also called sub-forums. So it's two layers of sub-forum hierarchy all in one single forum. Hope that helps.

Les

Hi Les (and Mosc)

I see (sort of). I am thinking part of the confusion stems from the fact that the "subject" field is blank when one is replying to a thread. In most of the user groups Ive been on, (I think) when one replies to an established thread, the thread subject is a constant and is filled in. Even if one changes the subject, if one hits "reply" it remains visible as being in that original thread to readers of the forum (I think this is true of the Steinberg Forum, for example)

Another confusing thing is that when one replies to a PM one does not see the message that one is replying to in the response field. That can be disconcerting- one needs to remember specific things the sender sent to respond to, and one cannot address issues one at a time by scrolling, quoting, etc.

All that being said, any changes to a system that is as established as yours have to take into account the greater good- so, if most people figure it out, and it all seems to be working, I say keep it as it is and just be patient, as you have been, with those of us trying to grasp it! I actually enjoy figuring out system quirks. Its the stuff of life...

Tantroniq, I've quoted parts of your message to show you how that's done. You click on "quote" button in the upper right and it inserts the post as a quote in your new post. Also you can scroll down and there is a scrollable box that shows previous message text.

As to the subject missing, on this forum the subject of a post within a thread is actually the subject of your post and is optional and usually left blank. Hope that helps.

Les
