Well, crazy as it looked, Metasynth (which until now, was Mac only), was really just a copy of the mighty opto/ electro-mechanical Russian synthesiser, the ANS (named after the Russian composer, Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin). Some blurb here;

http://home.swipnet.se/sonoloco2/Rec/Electroshock/ans.html

and here;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANS_synthesizer

If you didn't know, the ANS was responsible (with the help of some superb operators/ composers too- Eduard Artemyev springs to mind first) for bringing us such haunting electro-acoustic soundtracks to Tarkovski films such as Solaris and Stalker. There's only one ANS left in the whole world, and that one is deep down in the very depths of Moscow Sate University.

Anyway, some clever Russian programming dude has just written a PC emulation of the ANS which coincidently sounds very similar to Metasynth, but unlike both the ANS and Metasynth, the Windows version won't "cost you an arm and a leg"- as they like to say, after that interrogation with the KGB! Shocked Laughing
