An idea just crossed my head – after I read a topic on circuitbenders.co.uk a guy started to “rom dump” from different drummachines and edited the files and reburned the eproms.

I was wondering – has anyone tried that with the 3.03 version? Or maybe asked for some kind of opensource of the os?

Because Clavia doesn’t development in their modular project anymore – all I see is pianos and advance samplers (nordwave). If it could be possible to get some kind of open-source something, then the users could development the instrument with new features and fixing bugs Rolling Eyes

Editing audio samples embedded in a ROM is a lot easier than modifying
DSP code at the assembly level.

Keep in mind, and changes to the firmware in the Nord Modulars would require changes to the Nord modular Editor as well. The sources for that application would need to be open too.
Neither of those has been open-sourced to my knowledge.

It has been discussed many times here, I don't know if the idea has ever been presented to Clavia officially.

What would Clavia lose to make the NM sources open?
Since the technology is so old, I wouldn't suspect that any current IP is at risk.

Comments??

I tried asking Clavia and they answered:

Quote:
Hi

This will not happen, there are too many things in the Modular OS that are still to be considered as being intellectual property.

I'd love to see the firmware for this puppy opened up!

Clavia really has nothing to lose. They haven't gotten income for a unit since when.. 2002? It would be really sweet to see what kind of creative modules users could come up with. The recent Eurorack renaissance comes to mind...

Either this or.. anyone got any ideas for an open source hardware unit like the G1/G2?

This idea sounds dangerous.

I'd like to see this too but I think w/regard to the G1 - it's about how elegant and flexible the software is + they are fairly rugged bits of hardware.

Whoever designed it would have to combing computer savvy with instrument building skills. The guy from Madrona Labs (who made Aalto and the Soundplane controller) is clearly considering it.

The only other thing I can think of that would be similar is running Reaktor in a Receptor style external box.

Aalto sounds nice. It seems from the interface that he's got some of the modular concepts and improved upon them. I like the small wave form displays overlaid on the modulation controls. That's really need.

After playing with the G1 that's one thing I wish the software had was more signal analysis views. Even a few more signal leds would have been nice.

Grass is always greener, I guess.

If Madrona labs made a software modular beyond the Aalto it has potential to be really cool.
