Noob looking to build syths |
|
|
Hey peeps...
Im looking to learn to build some synths to complement my retro music set up.
Currently interested in some kind of drum sequencer
Musical tastes are varied so still haven't found my sound yet but aiming for a heavier sort of chip tune
Built guitar pedals in the past and repair old computers so can follow schematics but hoping to learn more and be able to design my own stuff
I've a couple of mutable instruments boards to build but I'm still learning smd soldering so haven't braved it yet... Lol
Expect plenty of questions and stupid ones at that...
Point me at the schematics! |

to start: i would suggest a simple relaxation oscilator as lfo.
would give you with a dual opamp a buffered rectangle wave
with a quad opamp buffered rectangle and triangle-alike & inverted triangle-alike
or
with a quad opamp buffered rectangle and saw alike & inverted saw alike
will be handy for the rest of your live for giving you gate`n`clock`n`modulation`more |

Thanks for the tips... Gonna start having a search through the schematics to see what I've got parts for and what would be a good starting point.. should maybe do one from each category you suggested... Build up my collection from there... 😁 I've a mutable instruments module tester I'll build first and then start on the modules... Just so I don't blow everything up straight away... Looking forward to starting now!! |

Minor, but it would also pay to decide what overall format you're going to go for.
If you want to build a modular, then decide on the format. Homebrew (like vladosh, or LookMumNoComputer), or Eurorack, or Moog/Dotcom format. |

very importan if you plan on buying kits ,if so - then it's good earorack ,if you plan on more diy approach then 4U and 5U is very good as it gives you more space _________________ http://synthacks.blogspot.com/ шематикс |

Probably a DIY through hole to start with... I'd like to move on to smd stuff and creating tiny boards... But that's way down the line... For power supply I've seen a couple of options... There is a frequency central board for cheap quick I'll probably use to start with and as I build up the dopfer ones look the easiest to sort..
As for size I'm actually tempted to do a look mum no computer approach as you can pick up aluminium sheets much much cheaper if they are say 200mm X 100mm... Again that's just to start with.. my aim is to keep things as low cost as possible until I know what I'm doing... 😁 Or at least have more of a clue! |

just don't buy the cheapest pots so you might think your build is not working.. take good care of distro boards in your system or it will give you headache later with wiring ,as for smd i do it only when i have to , i got some cheap CA3080 in smd that work fine so i solder only stuff like that in SMD ,rest is thru hole _________________ http://synthacks.blogspot.com/ шематикс |

I'd say look into the SMD thing once you are consistantly getting good solder joints every time. |
