Styroflex (polyestireno) VS Silver Mica Caps for Yusynth VCO Subject description: Temperature Coefficient Differences |
|
|
Hi:
I'm collecting parte to build some Yusynth VCOs. Yves told me that I
should use Styroflex or Silver Mica Caps with a Temp Coeff less than 70 ppm/C.
I have the choice to buy Styroflex 1% with a Temp coeff ±:+110ppm/°C, -50ppm/°C,
and Silver Mica 1% with a Temp coeff ±:+70ppm/°C, -0ppm/°C.
Silver mica are a little more expensive, but seems to be better, but
most of the time I ses VCO designs that uses Styroflex (Polyestirene) caps.
What is better?
Thanks. _________________ Sebo

Hi Sebo
Styroflex 1% are OK, no problem, in my case I chose Silver Mica 1% because it was easier for me to source them. _________________ Yves |

Hi Yves:
Thanks a lot for the help.
I'm going to build 4 VCOs, but I'm going slowly (little time/small budget). _________________ Sebo

Yes, they ship from Bangkok.
But where on their site did you actually find polystyrene caps? They only list polyester. _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |

Thnx I know banzai. But they have no values I need (47n) for CGS Utility LFO. Or I can use silver mica for those? Yeah? |

I used polystyrene caps in my Yusynth VCO and my VCO-1 and they are extremely stable. In fact my Yusynth VCO and VCO-1 are the most stable all the VCOs I've built so far.
I ordered mine from Mouser. I noticed that in the two pages of polystyrene caps they had in stock that none of them were ROHS. That may be part of the problem with obtaining them in Europe. _________________ When they plug me in the lights go down in Hong Kong.

As far as I know polystyrene (styroflex) doesn't come larger than 10nF.

You can use almost anything in an LFO, especially when using large values. Are you going to tell the difference between a 1 second and 1.01 second cycle? _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |

That might also be because few are still in active production, most will probably be old stock.

The LRC boxed type polystyrene seem to be reasonably common. But there is still plenty of old Siemens styroflex about. _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |

Mica is not the best material for VCO caps because of its relative large soakage effect.

I'll check my stock of Poly caps tomorrow (later today, after I wake up) as I recently took in a whole pile of write-off stuff from work, including a few thousand poly caps of various values. (150nF; 2.2nF; 15nF and possibly a couple of others).
I'll see if I can find out what poly types they are. If they're polystyrene 1nF's, I can mail you down a few for nothin'. |

I got 25 from West Florida Components on eBay at one point. They don't seem to have any listed currently, but might still have some. They ship for almost nothing to EU, so probably even cheaper inside the US. _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |

Doh! All of my poly caps that I have many many of, are MMK types - Metalized Polyester Film.
Now - I don't know how the different poly types stack up compared to each other. I used to have a link to a capacitor site explaining them all but that was before my hard drive crash. Anyone??
_IF_ this type would be ok, I have only about 5-10 of the 1nF's that I could spare. 1.5nF - I have just over 2000, still on tape reel. |

Polypropylene would be an alternative, but polyester usually isn't. _________________ http://www.casia.org/modular/ |
