Subject description: Repository of old versions of OS, editor, and USB driver
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi,

With the new 1.62 editor/OS out now, I wondered if it may be worthwhile storing the 1.40 versions online here. I think Clavia is no longer making these available on their website. I don't know if the current USB driver will work with the old OS and editor; if not, hosting that may be useful as well.

I am not planning to update my OS or editor in the short term.

I don't know if this would be agreeable to the forum host. Of course, I expect this would have to be permitted by Clavia first.

------------------------
edit 25/02/2009 - subject updated

Clavia have now given permission for old versions of OS, editor, and USB driver files to be hosted locally here for redistribution, with the following conditions:
- files are labelled with computer OS requirements
- files are labelled as old versions
- files are distributed as complete release packages
- only final release versions are redistributed; no pre-release/beta versions etc
- files are hosted locally at electro-music.com, not linked to the Clavia web server
- no support for sourcing/hosting files is to be requested from Clavia (see transcript posted in reply to this thread; I am reading into Clavia's response a little here)

Hi,

As there have been no replies (or objections) so far, I will go ahead and contact Clavia regarding this matter.

Please post a reply here if there are any thoughts on this, or if I have missed the obvious, such as these files being offered elsewhere.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi,

this is a transcript of a message I sent to the Clavia tech support:

-----------------------
Hi,

This is not really a tech support question, but I could not see a more appropriate means to make contact regarding the following request:

As there is now OS/Editor version 1.62 + USB drievr for the Modular G2 series, I would like to ask permission to have OS/Editor version 1.40 + USB driver hosted at the electro-music.com forum.

There are still people such as myself using 1.40, and there has been at least one minor issue reported regarding 1.62. I would just like for this older, but still stable and useful software to remain available to G2 owners.

I am not a moderator or organiser at electro-music.com, though I am a member there, and thought I should first ask for your permission before posting your software to the forum. I am still waiting on comment from the electro-music.com moderators regarding their position on my proposal.

Thanks for considering this issue.

Regards,

Oliver

Hmm yes ... Laughing I forgot about this topic.

I think it would be very nice to have an "old software" repository here, and indeed as you you remarked this would be a decision to be made by Clavia. I do welcome your initiative to contact Clavia about this and am looking forward to see Clavia's reply.

Cheers Jan.

I'm waiting on their reply. Having sent my request through their tech support form may contribute to delays, but I couldn't see any email addresses on their site which I could use. Hopefully the request will still be attended to.

Hi,

I have received an email from Clavia Product Manager Tomas Johansson, outlining permission to have these files hosted here. Transcript follows:

---------------------------------------
On Wed, 2009-02-25 at 09:27 +0100, Tomas Johansson wrote:

Hi Olivier

We do not have any objections as long as these files are clearly
labeled with OS requirements, as older versions, and that the release
packages are complete (all the files, drivers etc.). Do not upload
any beta versions that some of you may have. The hosting of the files
should be done "locally" at EM.com. We may at any time, without
notice chose to remove any legacy files from the clavia web server,
so do not link to these.

I do not have any time to spare at the moment to help you with this
so you are on your own a bit Smile.

I will be sure to honour your requirements, which I am certain I can

I'll try to upload the 1.40 Windows files this evening.

Oh well, I guess their rep has been a little tarnished amongst modular owners by a couple of matters. Personally, I still hold the company in pretty high regard, though I never thought of them as more than what they are. I don't think their support has been unreasonable, certainly better then many companies, though a few of their promises/claims perhaps should not have been aired in public, prior to a capacity to deliver on them.

Yup, and, just to be sure, I was not trying to imply unwillingness from Clavia's side to be helpful towards customers. I had expected no for an answer, and that they would have put the software up on their own website instead.

Hi,

I didn't think to ask permission for electro-music to host old versions of the demo. I was mainly just thinking about keeping OS/editor v1.40 available.

If you like, I could email Tomas regarding this, as well. Presumably, some of the members here may have old versions of the demo stored somewhere.

Thanks for bringing this up.

FYI: There is no new version of the demo and version 1.40 is still on the Clavia site.

Yeah, thanks, I should have mentioned that. This is one reason why I didn't think to include the demo in the repository, as the 1.4 version is obviously still current with the 1.62 OS/editor.

I assume sebber was thinking about older (1.2x?) versions to be stored here, for completeness?

I don't actually use the demo at all, and I am also not sure if anyone has any use for any software pre 1.4 anyway.

Riddles? Sorry.

No, I just thought it would be complete with the Demo-Version. No need for an old demo. But since they say they might take down everything w/o further notice it would be nice to have the demo here, if that's allowed.

You may want to add the manual for the patch mutator. It was a separate PDF the last time I looked, but it may have been merged into the mnai users guide by now.

Hi Cappy,

Thanks for the pointer. I hadn't thought of that. I'll look into this when I get time.

Cheers,

Hey gomidas,

Thanks for the link. I'm hesitant to upload any of these files to this thread myself, as I don't have a Mac, and can't provide any verification of the files.

If you have a Mac (I guess you may, as you know about the Mac site), would you please please have a look at the v1.24 and v1.4 editor files, and upload them to this thread, making sure they comply with Clavia's requirements? I think the Mac versions had no requirement for a custom USB driver, and the manual covers both OSs, right? Also, if you are able to upload these, please make a note of OS version support.

Of course, the conditions stipulated by Clavia prohibit what I think is a v1.3 pre-release and the 1.62 files to be hosted here.

Cheers,

Oli

Hi Cappy,

I think there has only been one version of the mutator manual, which is the current one. I haven't verified this with any real rigour, though. I'm not sure if it is necessary (or permitted) to host this here.

I haven't contacted Clavia again regarding this matter, and have not asked for permission to have any current version files hosted here. I probably should have raised this matter in my original email.

Cheers,

Oli
