Seraph: Nemo Variations |

a new quasi-symphonic piece uploaded today.
it's called Nemo Variations
it started as an improvised monophonic line that I captured on my sequencer while I was playing it. That line (no adjustments, quantizations etc.) became the theme (stated at the beginning of the piece) and also the only material used for all subsequent permutations.

I am glad you guys like it. I have to admit I like it too (or as Bachus would say "I feel minimal unhappiness about it") 
I knew Howard would like it and I am getting used to Stein's multiple posts to express his feelings.

While that would be interesting I don’t see that there would be much aesthetic virtue in the undertaking. A strong point of the piece is its coherence, which it has at both the thematic/structural level and aurally. It’s not clear to me that live performers could achieve that level of aural coherence and be true to the piece—for example the strings using harmonics at the end--not sure how else that could be achieved. I think the piece would have to be rewritten somewhat for that to work. I could raise similar problems elsewhere.
And I guess it bothers me a little to hear people say things that suggest that quasi acoustic "electro music" would be really good on “real” instruments. Partly the piece is good because it is true to its “electro music” instrumentation.

| I think this music would translate very well to an orchestra and there is something fantastic about hearing a live orchestra play beautiful music in a hall filled with other music lovers that are moved and touched by the music. Much of the electro-music we write is beyond the scope and technology of conventional orchestras, so our audience usually listens to it alone on their audio system. This is cool, but there is a definite drawback to this compared to the shared experience of listening to live music. That's one reason I like live electronic music. To me, music is a social art form. |

thank you  the coefficient of unhappiness relative to this piece is quite low

this piece, with all the due respect, reminds me of the atmosphere of Henryk Gorecki's Third Symphony, Op 36 ("Symphony of Sorrowful Songs") that I first heard as part of the soundtrack of Peter Weir's Fearless
My ego would certainly be gratified if someone asked me to write an orchestral version of this piece but I agree with

I would only add that music is not only that, it's also a very personal experience that you can enjoy in the solitude of yourself and your headphones.

thanks you are right, I 'd be glad to listen to a live performance of my music either played on acoustic instruments or on synthesizers

As for the discussion - would this translate to a concert setting? I believe it would! The composition is so strong that I'm sure it would survive the transition into an electro-acoustic rendition very well, maybe even benefit from it.. In my mind's ear I hear this played in the Nidaros Cathedral (Trondheim, where electro80 and myself live). Every year in late July and early August there's the Saint Olaf Festival, a mixed cultural and religious festival/convention. Lots of lovely concerts covering the whole gamut of musical expression from renaissance music to jazz to mainstream pop to ethnic to experimental, and Nidaros (old Norwegian for Trondheim) being a former catholic cathedral, and also one of the most important desinations for pilgrims in European catholicism there're always quite a few concerts by Italian artists, both jazz, folkloric and classical. I think you would be a hit. so GIVE IT A TRY! You KNOW you get at least three paying punters, Stein Anna Irene and mice elf. What say you, Stein?
