steve from Telecult Powers got my first Zeitgeist, and the wife appropriated my Benjolin, so i had to replace 'em. The modules, not the friends & family.

Looking cool (the others also!)

Those three pots to the left are they extra cv attenuators?

yes, external CV ins for both oscillators and the filters. the osc. inputs are normaled to the opposing oscillator triangle outputs, for cross-modulation if nothing's patched in to them.

transformer

Nice.I´m currently planning on building a dual benjolin in a nice metal box I found. Will bring out all inputs and outputs to the front.

I figured stuff like if both 4021s are chained in series and clocked from the same osc, the output of the 2nd 4021 will be a delayed version of the first, could yield interesting arabesques. And much more. Inspiring circuit!

EDIT: actually Rob describes just that in this threadhttp://electro-music.com/forum/topic-41489.html

here's my benjolin i build (a while ago)
I rewired it yesterday, because the header pin wires were failing, those were very thin wires!

replaced the 7809 as well.

now all is well again Smile

Surprised Fetideye- what happend to your connector? And regulator too?
Nice looking box you have there. I´m still building my double benjolin (that will live in an old east german toolbox) and are interested in your xperiences happy smoker

Macumbista- Your butterfly benjolin is killer. And letterstamped is so beautiful if done well, I could never achieve that when I tried, maybe I should try again...

Thx! It is very time consuming. I've been CNCing them lately, but that also isn't the quickest process in the world!

i etched the pcb myself. the holes for the regulator were a bit too small and i couldn't get a fitting regulator. because of this, I had some problems with the power (only 1 side worked sometimes)

i wired the headers with dupont wire (with connectors) , that was a bad choice.

ps: a a synth meeting I met a guy who had modded his benjolin with multiturn pots (as fine frequency control) . I think i'm going to do that too!
(wired over the existing frequency pots)

This could also be because of the regulators themselves. Rob recommends putting reverse-biased diodes just after the regulators to prevent this, it's written somewhere in the documentation Wink

Here´s my Twinjolin, labeling will be following with old school Dymo- I just love the rundown industrial look...

Thanks Rob, a lot of fun already!
And thanks Macumbista for inspiration Very Happy

a few mods:
-switch for loopx1/off/loopx2
-switch for loop lenght, 6/8 steps on rungler 1, 7/8 steps on rungler 2
-switch for crossfeed of selected output bits rungler 1 into data in on rungler 2 (and vice versa for weird canons)
-ext. clock inputs on both runglers for syncing the runglers etc.
-Hp/Bp outs added (especially love the Hp)
-internal resonance trimmer (parallel to R28) for max.Q up to self oscillation (which is actually not desirable as s.o. is frequency dependent and sets in with high squealing, but you can trim resonance to the edge, for for even more wet/pingy sound than given circuit)

Powersupply is MFOS circuit, jacks are 3,5mm type high quality

Dual Zeitgeist will be following! I found the pcb layout on muffwiggler-

Looks great! Love the metal toolbox enclosure!

I'd be curious to see what you did for the loop length mod. Also, the HP/BP outputs are just tapped from different places in the filter architecture, or did you need to buffer them, etc?

Thanks!

Loop lenght: really simple, put the node of R16/R17 on the middle lug of a switch, and put the bit out pins of the 4021 on the outer lugs...
You could use 3throw switch for all possibilities, but I used 2 throw...

It would probably be good practice to buffer the filter outs, but I think it is not necessary with any sane load impedance (just as the original lp out).

The crossfeed feature is a winner, btw. With the runglers synced, benj2 plays the pattern of benj1 with eight step delay, trhat ties everything together nicely, I recorded a little piece, that I will upload asap (I record on cassette) cyclops

This is my Benjolin standalone unit adapted for an interactive art show in Santa Fe. The front selector switch chooses the various output. I added a rack mount compressor/limiter to the output which equalizes volume through the transition from filtered(low level) to pulse, sawtooth wave(high) nicely. Next time I will spring for the extra long potentiometer for the oscillator pitch. Thanks to MFOS for the power supply PCB art. I love my Benjolin!

All of these are really splendid. I've always liked Plexiglas cases.

If you're curious to try this thing out and don't have any hardware, I just released a Pure Data version of the Benjolin here:

I just tried it a few hours ago and all I can say is "Amazing!". I'd recommend this to anyone, and I've started broadcasting with it on em radio (on my local channel, not any of the main ones). Thanks!

Hello, here's my Modcan A format dual Benjolin (using elmegil's fantastic PCB's) :

The panel is a temporary paper faced version, and an unusual 3U wide.

I added an op-amp to raise the filter output on par with the other outputs, I also plant add some normalisations using push-pull pots, and I am now considering maybe adding some of the Casper mods (and modify the panel to make it even larger)
