Is it just my mp3 player or is the difference between these two files (*.wav and *.mp3) just normal?

Although it's not audible on this computer's internal speaker some quality loss can be expected for a 64 kbps 22 kHz mp3. I'd try higher bit rates and wider frequency ranges until you find a point where the difference becomes acceptable to you.
