Subject description: getting "that sound"

so im trying to push further in making electronic music. i thought it was the coolest thing when i learned to make the "wub" noise, and quickly realized that there's more to bass tracks than that, i can make deep enough synth presets, but i dont find them musical....it took forever for me to get the sound in my head to my guitar amp, and im having the same heck of a time with soft-synths, i have a tone im looking to get, but not sure how to get there, there's a lot of knobs and they all do different things, guitar amps are simple enough, i know what the mid knob does, and how it effects the sound, so if someone could point me to a guide that explains what the parameters in a synth will do to the sound that would be great, a general guide as i know they're all different. im working with subboombass and predator. but aside from that im looking for some dance/house basses...the owner of the computer is fine with the default presets, instead of hearing the sound in his head, he hears a melody/bassline/beat from the sound of the synth...

and the buzzing-what-i-assume-to-be-bass that comes in at 0:09 in wallflower
