Hi Guys,

My new MacBook pro seems to get very hot.

If I press my finger down on the piece of metal above the function keys it is really hot, heat extends all the way to the front of the case.

Looking at the temps with Hardware Monitor I am seeing around 60 degrees on most sensors when pushing it hard.

Is this sort of stuff normal?

Yep it gets hot, but no way as hot as XP gets it. That's quite disturbing actually. Fried eggs anyone?? Shocked

Thanks for the info, I will stop worrying then.

I'm installing leopard at the moment (after backing up to external drive) too see how much of my software still runs, hopefully it will be ok, fingers crossed!

All laptops suffer from heat. I've heard an actual recommendation that men should avoid working with laptops on their laps Exclamation

It is getting really hot now, cpu temp is over 80 degrees and heatsinks are not far off this.

It is actually painfull to touch now there is no way you could use it on your lap.

I tried smcfancontrol but it doesn't seem to work on leopard, I get no display.

I'm going to have to turn it off for a while!

No it wasn't whiring away much at all, about 3K rpm.

I spent some time reading the smcfan web page and realised it was working, I was just being an idiot and not looking at the menu bar Embarassed

I have whacked the fans up to 4K minimum and it is cooling down nicely, sitting at 55 degrees now, hot but not painful to the touch.

Apple must have it set to keep the fans running slow.

Mine does not get hot at all, btw I love its trackpad: the 2 fingers vertical and horizontal scrolling is awesome as the 2 fingers click for contextual menus.

You could fry eggs on mine. The fans dont even start reving up until the cpu temp is around 75!

Lovely computer though, good for winter use.

Since I put Leopard on (10.5), the fans come on more often. When I was running Tiger, they rarely came on. Although, XP would make the fans go nuts- it still does.

However I've now max'ed the memory out to 3 gigs and it's absolutely wild having both XP and OS X both running side by side at blazingly fast speeds.

The fans don't come on so often since I've increased the memory and stopped using Firefox Exclamation

The thing I have found is that if you push it hard it actually gets cooler as the fans ramp up to 6000 rpm, I cannot quite work out the algorithm they are useing for the fans but I think it is not just based on temperature it also takes into account actual cpu usage.

Under gentle use my cpu temp will sit at around 70, then if you start pushing it it goes to about 85 then the fans really start kicking in and it drops to 60 and stays there untill you stop pushing it and then the fans come down and it goes back to 70.
