Just a quick post to declare that I think this is in my top 5 albums of all time. Others may not agree, but anyone who knows it will have a lot better insight into what makes Uncle Krunkus tick.

BTW I've had this album for ages, and just realised how much it moves me.

I agree. Portishead is a great band and Dummy is an excellent piece of work.

Top 10 for me, very fond memories of when many tracks from this album where played in chill-out rooms from the many illegal raves I went to around that time.

Sigh

I used to own the album. It never moved me very much. But I think I understand what you mean about "just realizing" how much the album affects you. I feel the same way about Depeche Mode's Violator. ("Enjoy the silence" is playing right now in my living room.) It was one of my first CD's, and I bought it as one of my free cd's for joining BMG. The video for "Enjoy" blew me away when I was in junior high, and it still does. I had not listened to Violator for years when I found myself singing "Halo" one night. I bought the album again a few days later. It is the fourth or fifth copy I have owned. To my ears it still sounds incredibly fresh. The tight, claustrophobic moods do not seem dated to me at all.

Anyway, I know this is a Dummy thread, and not a Violator thread, but I understand rediscovering an album, and realizing it is one of your very favorites—it is amazing how we don't realize these things, sometimes!

d

p.s. A shout out to my boy Alan Wilder!

For those who can get BBC2, 10 o'clock tonight, portishead live with some of the songs from the new album.
