Old ADSR gate levels

Ok,

si I built one of Ray's Oldies but Goodies ADSR with state Indicator LEDS, mostly because he has single sided PCB artwork available for it.

It works almost exactly as advertised right down to the fine print of "12v Gate"

Now of course, my system is awash with 5V gates isn't it.

So, with little actual understanding of what I was doing I tried all sorts of variations on making a simple transistor buffer. I thought I could send a 5v gate into Base, have 12v at the collector and have the emmitter go to the ADSR gate input with a resistor to pull it to ground when not being gated.

This only works if I still give it a 12v gate!

Am I right in thinking I can use a simple transistor setup to convert my 5v to 12v this way? If so... HOW???
