hi all,

i am currently building an enclosure for my gristleizer.
i am using the PCB that was offered here not too long ago.
the PCB does not have mounting holes- i guess the layout was made in such a way that one could use pcb-mounted pots to hold the board in place.
however, i did not solder the pots directly to the PCB for various reasons.

now, how to hold the PCB in place? there is no "free" area on the PCB to drill holes.
i was thinking about using some self-adhesive foam to glue it in place but at the same time i am not too fond of the idea - the foam will degrade over time and leave a huge mess.
hot glue comes to mind as well, but again... do i want that?
i have seen rails that will hold a pcb on its edges - are those the only option?

how would you go about it?

chris

Do a google search for "PCB edge holding"

There are a lot of different edge mounting solutions.

Not all of them may be carried by your parts house...

Here's one:

You could kluge one up out of standard spacers with oversized nylon washers.
Or cut grooves in little blocks-something one of my dad's pals used to do with his homemade radios.

Very cool! Do you know if you can find these at any of the big U.S. distributors (Mouser, Allied, Digikey, etc..)? I've always used velcro in these situations, with good results, but always felt just a little hacky doing so, so am curious about a more elegant solution.

Pretty sure Jameco doesn't, I never looked for them at Digikey or Allied. I avoid Mouser altogether-crappy web interface makes looking for things like this a pain in the posterior. Also check some the smaller dealers.

<long anecdote about Sequential's use of velcro on memory back up battery holders removed with blunt object>

Thinking out loud here (a bad habit in the best of times Smile ), a few cable clamps like this might work:

http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&productId=173737[/img]

Cut them in half, use the flat bottom as a standoff, the circular top as a clamp.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
I think I'll go the standoff/nylon washer route. Why didnt I think of that?!?
