K2000 getting a new display... |
 |
|
I've been putting this off for way to long. Those who have them know that the displays on the Kurrzweil K2000 synths were pretty horrid to read - especially when they age. I've seen several modifications over the years where the EL backlight is either replaced or the complete display is replaced with one that has the CFL backlight.
Recently in a Kurzweil mailing list I received, a member documented how he updated both his K2000 and K2000R displays with a new LED backlit version. The display is a nice blue and white - much more readable. I ordered the display - it was ~$33 including shipping. I'll be doing the install this weekend. I'm looking forward to using the K2000 again. I really liked it's capabilities but with the poor display it was not very fun to work with.
Here is a link to the page with the upgrade documentation.

There is also a link at this site to the site where the display can be purchased. NOTE: at the purchase site it only mentions it as a replacement for an SY77/99. It actually does work with the K2000 - you just have to mod the case a bit. _________________ Dave

Thought I would post a follow up. Installation was pretty straight forward - only ran into some issues removing a ribbon cable from the old display but time and patience won out.
The new display is fantastic. I feell like I've got a new synth to play with!
So, if anyone out there has a Kurzweil K2000 with the old EL backlit display - this new one will bring the K2 back to life. You do need some electronic soldering skills - and you will have to slightly enlarge the hole in the cover that the display fits in (you can't tell once the bezel is back on). In my opinion, if your K2000 functions fine except for the display - this is worth it. this mod also applies to the rack version as well.
Now to load my synth pads back into it. I always like the pads the K2 could produce.

| That's cool. Even with a good backlight the old k2000 displays were very dim. That makes it look like the new pc3 models. |

It's so nice to be able to see the text on the display now without having to right over top of it. I'm really jazzed about this - it's like having a new synth to play. _________________ Dave

Unfortunately I don't have any new links. You could try a google search or look over at gearslutz.com. I thought I saw a more recent discussion there regarding K2000 displays.
Good luck! _________________ Dave

exchanging lcd to LED is pretty straightforward... simply remove old one, resolder tape, solder +5v and G and voila.

Nice! Could you post a link to where you got the parts or told you where to get the parts for future reference? _________________ Dave
