Wow, this thread is 7 or 8 years old. Thanks, Dale.
Anyway, I was thinking about ZIM. I identify with the early avant-garde composers of about 100 years ago. Their philosophy values newness and originality that is free of conventional tonality, harmony, rhythms, instrumentation and structure. In this respect, ZIM is very pure. I think the early avant garde musicians would really appreciate it.
Still, I look forward to playing 5 string banjo with Dale in the not-to-distant future.  _________________ --Howard

No input banjo?
One could also play no-strings banjo... essentially a banjo is a drum with strings on it.
Jokes aside, NIM is fun. And dangerous, especially when one wears headphones. Sometimes one can turn knobs and nothing happens, but then just the right knob at the right time and POW! a sudden and deafening blast of noise leaps out. _________________ .: james :. |

To me feedback is an exiting form of synthesis.
Circular synthesis maybe?
Because it is basically the noise floor looping through gain stages that is the "source" of the audio...
For me one of the more impressive and beautiful installments of this is Nicholas Collins´ Pea Soup.

Howard! How did I miss your post? I am pointing someone from FB who plays ZIM at this thread.
I plan to retire January 1, 2025, may have a chance to get to NC and visit. Do you ever come back to PA? For better or worse my younger son and his family plan to move to Albuquerque next year where my older son has lived since 2004, with wife & kids since 2020-2021, so it looks like we'll be following our kids and grandkids to NM. But I am hoping for some nomad time after the move settles that could include NC.

" But hold on...
First, a word or two of warning. Taking a signal and amplifying it, then reamplifying it again and again and again ad infinitum results in a very loud signal. It will almost immediately hit the ceiling of what your equipment is capable of reproducing (unless you delay it, more on that later). It is therefore essential that you protect yourself and your equipment from damage. Here are a few guidelines, but use your sense at all times...
Don't use headphones - since they are directly placed over your ears and loud signals will more easily damage your hearing.
Lower your main output to protect your speakers - they are the most likely part of your equipment to blow up if things get out of hand.
Use a limiter (or even better, several) - limiters are your safety net, but be aware that very very high levels can break through some limiters.
Never leave a feedback loop alone - at least not to start with. Nurse it and get to know how things behave over time.
Have a kill switch or fader - if the feedback loop tries to eascape out of your speakers, your most likely first reaction is to freeze. After that, make sure your first move requires no thinking.
Also be aware that may also get very loud high or low frequencies which may cause strange or unexpected behaviour in your setup... so:
Be sensitive to pets - some very strange things happen to audio gear when you push it that may affect them. "
