Re. wanting to connect the SN-Voice to a keyboard: unless you don't care about chromatic note scaling, why would you want to omit 1v/oct scaling and yet hook it up to a beyboard?

Re. Omitting FM: you can't really get rid of the input FM unless you also get rid of the keyboard input, right? They're one in the same, unless you just mean the FM pot that goes between the FM-jack on the front and the actual scaling circuit.

Also, regarding running the whole thing on 5v instead of 12v - is this because you only have a 5v psu?

A 12v wallwart should do the trick nicely*, then all you need is a 7812 and a 7805 voltage regulator... which cost less than $.50 each and take minimal effort to implement in a circuit.

*a 12v wallwart usually puts out between 14v and 17v, which is sufficient power for a 7812.

I agree very much with you on these points ..... I thought it sort of odd also the revisions, or omissions I should say, from the original design that are being proposed.

If I were to build this project, I'd probably ommit the FM & LFO functions.

That's a strange thing to omit, seeing as the LFO is built-in to the SN chip; plus the LFO section gives you full control over the PWM that Thomas Henry added to the circuit.

Are you trying to save money? Or time?

If it's the former, than you're only saving ~$15 by stripping out the things that you mentioned. If you *really* want to cut costs, replace the lm394 with two 2n3904 transistors and the tempco with a regular 2k resistor.

If it's the latter, you're going to be spending a whole bunch more time either making your own pcb or modifying State Machine's by trying to omit the features & chips that you deem unnecessary.

Saving money is always a good thing as I don't have much of it!
But to be honest, I think it's time I was trying to save and I don't understand why... I'm not an impatient person Sad

I meant hard-wire it to it's own keyboard. Of course, I didn't think that idea through - I'd only be able to get the range of notes that're available on the keyboard itself! (Unless I went crazy with some sort of multiplexors)

Yep, I just meant the FM pot and whatnot.

Again, I was being impatient, I just thought 5-12 V would be easier to get hold of...

Looking back at what I've said, it seem pretty stupid really.
Since all of those things are part of the SN-Voice's "voice", why omit them?

Maybe this would be a good place to start in the world of 1V/Oct Modular Synthesis...
I'll have to look into parts availability and what work I have coming up in the New Year.

Thanks for your patience guys and your help, I appreciate it Smile

Please don't think I was trying to be rude in anyway by modding the PCB if I got one, State Machine.
I'm sure if I look into it again now, with an *awake* frame of mind, I'll what nonsense I've said Razz

Thanks again,
Alex

P.S. How come I never see you on EM411 anymore, Sneakthief?

hi tenine - i was just trying to make sure that you got the most out of your sn-voice Smile as such, i wanted to take the time to explain what i think is the easiest way to put this together with the least amount of hassle.

all DIY questions are good DIY questions!

cheers,
michel

re. em411 - i couldn't stand the new layout and the lack of "recent posts" feature. it made it too frustrating for me to go thru the forums

I do appreciate your advice Smile

It looks like a great litte synth, but I'm not sure I'm ready for it just yet then.
There's something that's been bothering me for ages and now I've figured out how to solve it, it's become my top priority.

Here's the link incase you wanted to have a look-
http://em411.com/forum/1670/1//Syncing_Nanoloop_to_a_Dr55.html

Once that's done (because until then, I can't do live shows), I'll indulge in some synthesis! Very Happy

Thanks again,
Alex

P.S. I'm not so keen on the new layout either, but I've got used to it.
I used to be Zander on the old one.

OK Guys, I have my first SN Voice unit all completed and will test it out this evening. I was too tired last night to run the "electrons" through it as I finished around midnight. Shocked

I will post the results and if all is well, let the ordering begin !!!! FINALLY !!!

State Machine, you previously mentioned adding a cap to your board, can you let me know the value. In case it is something I don't have around and need to order.

Thanks

Yes, I have added a few new components. Here is a list of the reference Designations and Type/Value

R64 100K 1/4 W
R65 100K 1/4 W
C23, C24 0.01 Disk
IC5 (U5) 78L05 5V Lin. Reg.

Nothing real exotic here so I sure you will likely have them.

Nice use of colour on the front panel Bill Very Happy

I always think synthesiser panels lack colour.

(wait till you see my Soundlab front panel Cool The Wild Zebra is the only dude who's been allowed a peek so far).

hehe- lack of colour seems to be frowned upon by the majority of engineers. But one thing's for sure, if I need to grab something in a hurry, if it's black and white it's far less immediate than something which is coloured. Putting a blue knob against a red background- well that's easier to remember than a line of text for eg.

Keep up the good work, and let them laugh. The more colour, the better imo Smile

This is pretty awesome. I paypal'ed for 2 sets last night. I've got a thing for twins! Wink Anyway, concerning your panel: how do you print out a 19" long adhesive label? Also, when I try to download your panel file, the format is .php...what program reads that? Thanks for all your efforts!

the panel that State Machine posted in this thread was just a JPG image - sometimes message boards don't send the proper MIME file-type header and so it just says that you're downloading a .pHp file. just rename it to panel.jpg or something like that and it will be fine.

and by the looks of his panel, he printed it out in two sections and pasted them on - i think i see a seam that bisects the "initial" pot and "keyboard" jack on the noise section.

Very observant! Thats is all correct Very Happy I am not sure why the server passes a .jpg file with an extension of (.php) which, BTW, is what the server side "Hypertext Preprocessor" uses to parse certain information from a page that contains php tags.

Anyway, to answer some specific questions about the SN Voice panel, I used "Front Designer Ver 3.0" from Abacom to do the panel artwork. I probably could have done a better job but wanted to get my prototype up and running and I just got the program literally that day Shocked .

http://www.saelig.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ES003&Category_Code=

I created my layout and drill layer using this program. I printed out my drill layer first leaving all the panel details out. Since the images spanned two sheets, I just cut the pieces with a rotary cutter and carefully taped them together. I then printed the panel artwork out in "mirror" image to an inkjet transparency. NOTE: Just remember to set your print settings to "transparency" for best result.

I then used the rotary cutter on that as well (used mostly by people who quilt and cut fabric) but did not tape that together.

Next step was to tape the drill template to the panel and use a Craftsman punch and small hammer to mark out all my holes. I then drilled all my holes using a drill press, cleaned and deburred the panel and painted the face of it flat white. I baked the panel for a bit to speed up the dry process.

I then made a custom decal by using the transparency printed out earlier and used clear double sided adhesive (I think I got it from Thermabond, I have to see). I carefully applied the custom panel decal to the rack panel face then used a sharp X-Acto knife to cut out all the holes. Now the panel was ready for mounting pots, switches, and jacks!

Hope this helps !

Bill

Guys, these boards are flying out the door, I just got an order for 10 just moments ago! If you wanted them, you may want to act fast as I may sell all 62 boards by next week .... I should have made 100 or more !!!

I am building my second SN Voice unit just like the first. I have decided to make a rack of gear devoted to synthesizers that use "vintage" sound generator/FX/Speech IC's .... examples include: SN76477, SPO-256, AY-89xx series, SID, Atari Chips, etc ...

Thanks, I just put in an order for one... the socket for the SN in the socket kit, is that for a wide or a thin body SN? I figure if you're getting this many orders this fast, I'd better acquire my SN now, lest our sources dry up!
