Update: Is there a way to 'save in synth', a fresh patch dump, in the G2 engine without the usb editor, with a sysex/midi command?
P.S: I'm afraid NOT Confused ...
...but please scroll down to answer Wink

--------
Old topic:

Hello there Smile
I am desperately looking for a way to create a .syx to control my G2(the broken usb one Confused ) from the BCR2000...
Like the one you find on the Manual p.148 :
Byte (hex) Description
$f0 Start of System Exclusive
$33 Manufacturer ID (Clavia DMI AB)
<Device> Device ID for this specific instrument
$00...$0f : Only the Nord Modular G2 with
specified device ID will respond
$10......$7e : Undefined
$7f : All connected Nord Modular G2's will
respond
$0a Model ID (Nord Modular G2)
$30 Message ID (Patch Request by slot)
$<Slot> $$00...$03 : Corresponds to slot A to D
$04 : Corresponds to active slot
$05...$7f : Undefined
$00 Spare, must be$00
$f7 End of System Exclusive

Should I use a simple hex editor and write the message with the $ and then save it as a .syx ?.....
e.g: $f0$33$01$0a$30$00$00$f7 for a Patch Request ?
Or should i use space instead of $? Like: f0 33 01 0a 30 00 00 f7 ?

Does anyone knows an editor to do that (eMacs??) , am I missing something about How To create a sysex from scratch????

Thank for reading..

You should get MIDIOX (if you have a PC)

http://www.midiox.com/

Select the input and output devices in the "Options->MIDI Devices..." option.

The open the sysex editor with "View->SysEx..." option.

Now write your sysex message, like "f0 33 01 0a 30 00 00 f7"

and send the message! That's all

You can also save and load sysex messages from the sysex window.

Dorremifasol, THANK YOU!!!

I'm on OSX, but parallels desktop is doing good, I've been using MIDIOX for a while when I was on XP, it's a great tool.

THANKS AGAIN!

Hi again!
I have some problems trying to send PATCHS (.syx) to the G2, when I send a patch with sysex librarian, the G2 doesn't seem to save the dump, the midi led show some activity, but the patch on the G2 stays empty.I mean is there some kind of midi learn mode on the G2 so that it can receive the dump?
I'm going to try MIDIOX and see if I get more luck with it.
Any help would be nice...Thxs

Could you attach the sysex you are trying to send? so I can test it in my G2 and figure out what is wrong with it...

Seems not to be complete. It's only 512 bytes, just the usual size of a sysex buffer.

I'll send you one that works. You may have to configure your sysex program.

IT WORKS !!!!! I tried it with my workin G2, but how could I save it in the internal memory of my broken G2 (no editor!!!!), is there a sysex or MIDI command that can do the 'Save In Synth...' job, that would solve ALL my probs....
Anyway! Thank you very much for your help...

Gomidas

PS: Nice patch Wink

Your Moog .syx is also working on the broken USB G2 engine, but definitely I can't see a way to save it in the synth...too bad Sad
I will work with the patchs already inside in live situation, and load some sysex (like yours) on the fly in a studio situation, it's the best I can do until ì repair the usb connector.

Gomidas

PS:I use Ableton live7 and don't think it can dump sysex from the sequencer on the fly, will a soft like Logic, who can manage sysex, will be able to send sysex patch sounds from within the sequence like a program change???

Most programs which play midi files can send sysex from a midifile, assuming that the sysex command is correctly formatted in that file.
I would be surprised if Ableton could not do this.
I have Ableton 7- I hope to get to try this this week.
In the meantime- google for utilities which will save sysex command in midi file format. It's quite possible Midiox can already do this, but i haven't tried this particular feature. Midiox has more features than one can learn in a lifetime.

I believe the sysex spec for the G2 only lets you send patches to SLOTS A,B,C, D, but not into a bank/location specifically.

You would have to do this from the editor (or from the front panel of a G2 keyboard)- which is not convenient when playing live.

I think your only solution is to put the patches in the engine before the live show, then select them using the Bank Change protocol (as specified inthe G2 midi spec). You can embed this in your midifiles, but may need to load these a few milliseconds (or longer) before you need the patches loaded.
Also- when changing/loading patches, I believe the G2 output shuts off the output briefly, as does the NM1 output.

Poly/voices count... we are dealing with this since the Old NM1, that won't differ from traditional patch changes Smile ....
I'm going to try Live7 with a sysex.mid and see what happen..... Wink
Also when I see this http://www.rekonaudio.com/VES_Lead2.php , we can read in the info "Now available is the ability to save and load your patches to and from the editor in the native, standard sysex format. Load up all your old libraries and recraft them with visible control!" ...so I believe there could be a sysex that will do the job...

Cappy2112!!!Thanks for your help!!!

The problem is the G2 sysex spec is very limited. There is NO support in the G2 firmware to save patches to a Bank/Location, nor can you retrieve your patches via sysex to save to disk. You can ONLY send patches to the 4 Slots via sysex. Everything else has to be done with the editor, or the front panel of the keyaboard.

All of the VST's in the world cannot do anything about these limitations. It is entirely dependant on the G2 firmware.

Yes, you can tell the G2 to send you a patch, and store it to disk later. I use that function in my sequences. In fact I made a little script to do it automatically:

http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-29583-59.html

The only missing command is to store a patch to a certain bank and patch number. I suppose that the G2 is not thought to fully work without using the USB port?

Yep! I just tried Studio Manager and it works nice, I can recall and load slots 'on the fly' but still can't write the patch in the synth's internal memory.
Am I missing something?Or am I stuck with my actual internal patchs bank (the one that was already in the G2 before the usb died, lucky me!!!) until I repair the USB?
PS:I should have bought the Key Laughing
