Subject description: connectors for a stand-alone power supply
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

I have decided to mount my power supply in its own little box to maximize the flexibility of my setup. I am going to have 4 outputs on the box in addition to the inlet/fuse holder/switch.

My question is what sort of connectors should I use to bring the power from the box to the case(s)? Would .156 molex connectors be the best or is there something that I am not thinking of?

Thanks!
Paul

Hello Paul,

You meant an external power supply? isn't it?

I used XLR connectors, Its a very clean setting up.

Regards.

I've used XLR, too, and they worked good. CB style connectors are cool, too.
I like a separate banana jack for each line now.
Make sure to use, at least 18AWG wire. 16AWG or 14AWG would be even better. If you use thicker gauge, make sure it can still be soldered to your connector pins. I think XLR have a limit of 18AWG.

XLR, I like it. Is there a reason you switched to individual jacks?

My main system still has the XLR (if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?).
My latest uses bananas because it has various duties with the extra cabs, breadboards, etc. so I end up stacking plugs at times. It gets left at the studio a lot, too, and I know someone would use it as their mic pre sooner or later! LOL.

Other points are:
Bananas are cheap
Very robust
Colors

I want to switch to heavier gauge wire and (I think) bananas are more accommodating here. We'll see.

Here's a link to some good info on wire gauge for PSU.

Another XLR user here, but I use 4-Pin XLR, to avoid the mic pre issue Wink

I guess XLR is the most reliable solution here, it´s sturdy, you can´t plug it in the wrong way, the plugs won't accidently fall out of the jack, and XLR connectors are affordable and available everywhere.

Best wishes,

Tobias.

I always recommend the mini-XLR locking connectors.
Cheapest from Futurlec here:
