HI there.
I'm on 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04.
Chuck was in the 64 bit repo's so i installed it.
but when i try the tutorial on the chuck web i get:
(via rtaudio): no devices found for compiled audio APIs!
[chuck]: cannot initialize audio device (try using --silent/-s)

So then i try the -s option, but that gives the seg-fault.
My understanding was, there isn't a 64 bit version of chuck(yet).
But it was in the 64 bit repo's for Unbuntu 9, so i figured maybe someone compiled one
for 64 bit.
I'm assuming thats why I'm getting the seg-fault, but i couild be wrong

Has anyone been able to get chuck to work in 64 bit Linux?

chuck --probe gives:
chuck --probe
Enhanced3DNow! detected
SSE2 detected
[chuck]: found 1 device(s) ...
Enhanced3DNow! detected
SSE2 detected
[chuck]: ------( chuck -- dac1 )---------------
[chuck]: device name = "Jack Server"
[chuck]: probe [success] ...
[chuck]: # output channels = 6
[chuck]: # input channels = 2
[chuck]: # duplex Channels = 2
[chuck]: default device = YES
[chuck]: natively supported data formats:
[chuck]: 32-bit float
[chuck]: supported sample rates:
[chuck]: 48000 Hz
[chuck]:
[chuck]: ------( chuck -- 1 MIDI inputs )------
[chuck]: [0] : "Midi Through Port-0"
[chuck]:
[chuck]: ------( chuck -- 1 MIDI outputs )-----
[chuck]: [0] : "Midi Through Port-0"
[chuck]:

When i try to run a chuck script i get ;
Enhanced3DNow! detected
SSE2 detected
Enhanced3DNow! detected
SSE2 detected
Enhanced3DNow! detected
SSE2 detected
Segmentation fault

As far as i know it's impossible to get ChucK to compile and run on 64 bits Linux. I don't know who put it into the 64bit repositories but unless something spectacular happened that was likely a mistake.

Very sorry about this but I can't help it either.

Yeah, it really should be in the docs more clearly to avoid disappointments like yours.
Sad

It turns out that a 32-bit compiled chuck runs just fine on 64-bit Ubuntu.

I mounted the root file system for a 32-bit Ubuntu 9.04 and copied /mounted-root/usr/bin/chuck* into my ~/bin. The necessary 32 bit libraries, libasound2, et al., are contained in the standard ia32-libs package which was already installed on my machine.

does anybody know about 64 bit support? the http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/release/ page says that they're working on it....

perhaps someone could unpack rec's post a bit for me... I don't quite follow. It sounds like hi booted to 32 bit linux, installed chuck, then ran it in 64 bit linux. is that right?

Sure, a little more unpacked. Though it sounds like you have it figured out.

A 64bit linux can run a 32bit application if you 1) install the application and 2) install the libraries it needs.

There are some trickier ways to accomplish 1) but I can never remember them, so I do it the easiest way for me and copy the chuck binary from a 32bit installation. To make sense of this you need to know that my laptop has a copy of XP, a 32bit version of Karmic Koala, and a 64bit version of Karmic Koala installed on it. For sake of argument, say that the XP is installed on /dev/sda1, the 32bit ubuntu on /dev/sda2, and the 64bit ubuntu on /dev/sda3. While running the 64bit ubuntu I can:
Code:

sudo mkdir /media/sda2 && sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media/sda2

to mount the 32bit root file system and then:
Code:

cp /media/sda2/usr/bin/chuck* ~/bin

to copy the 32bit chuck applications into my personal bin directory, and then:
Code:

sudo umount /dev/sda2 && sudo rmdir /media/sda2

to clean up.

(~/bin is a personal bin directory in my home directory which is used, like /bin and /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin, to store programs. You may need to make the directory and add it to your PATH environment.)

Step 2), installing the 32bit libraries on a 64bit system, is simple because they're all packaged up for the benefit of the flash plugin. Simply:
Code:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

and you will see /lib32 and /usr/lib32 be populated with libraries suitable for running 32bit applications. If the application requires additional 32bit libraries, there are ways to do it also too complicated to remember, but chuck doesn't need anything beyond the basic package of libs.
