the manual of this little mixer says that you need to activate "USB Audio CODEC" in the audio preference. I don't have that choice in my preferences. Is this a system extension that is already running?

I reckon the Multimix comes with some installer CD. Run the installer for the mac os x drivers. This will put the appropriate drivers into the OS X audio core directory system. you nmight as well restart or log in and out again. Then start the audio midi setup application inside the Applications/Utilities folder

if you have all the drivers installed ( probably just one ) you will be able to see the Alesis Multimix in the Audio section of the AMS app.

This is pretty much how all firewire/PCI/USB audio interfaces are set up with a mac. You might also have an extra control panel somewhere for the internal setting for the Multimix. This can be a standalone app, or it can have ended up somewhere in the System preferences panel
