Birds on Drugs 2 Subject description: Bigger birds & better Drugs... |

An update on my Birds track. Still using manipulated birdsong with some new field recordings...
This one tells more of a story I feel.
The basic concept is a riff on the old nature vs technology thang...I recorded lots of unique sounding New Zealand birds & places after being struck by the amazing musical/melodic qualities of the sounds I hear every day here....then, in processing them discovered a whole new world of possibilities.
The track starts with some fierce sine wave activity...quite electronic but also growly and "natural" sounding then proceeds to add ambient scenes & a reversed, chopped up synth part from a song I was writing. This theme keeps returning and starts to suggest images of birdsong ( to me anyway).
Half way through we get pitched down Tuis in all their oscillating, clicking, beeping glory and this then leads us to a battle of field recording vs. soft synths. Field recording nudges ahead and claims the day and, after a brief death spasm of chopped up, spastic noise there is an eerie calm and hints of birds taking flight.
I'm sure I can write a better description, but that'll do for now.
Again, only my second foray into electro-acoustic composition, and all done on cheapo gear ( mac g4 450, various demo software, own md recordings...) so all comments & advice welcomed. Last edited by evernaut on Tue Sep 05, 2006 10:22 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I found your track interesting to listen to, I liked the way you work with sound. So the following is really meant to be positive, even when it might not seem to be so maybe at first sight.
For me there are two distracting elements, being the recording quality and the "restlesness". Probably you can't really do anything on the recording side, at leas t not anymore. And the perception of restlesness is something that happens in my head, so I may be just "wrong" here.
If it would have been my piece, and I could have done something like it I think, I'd try to spend more time on it, as in my perception it has more in it than currently comes out.
Still I listened with pleasure, and I would certainly click again on a track posted by you. _________________ Jan

Hey thanks!
I really don't mind criticism or praise...I'm not that attatched to it, it was just a bit of fun toe-dipping exercise. It's sparked the idea for a longer, fuller & more structured exploration of the same theme...so it's served its' purpose.
Re: your comments. Is it the lo-fi bits in the track that are sub-par quality-wise? Or just the whole sound?
I wanted it to sound pretty grubby in parts to contrast with the cleaner tones that appear towards the end, but...
And, yes, it is supposed to make you feel restless...although, I agree, it could do with more "arrangement"
Thanks for listening in any case. Much appreciated. |

Aside from a few disturbing sound-jolts, i found this track to be very relaxing. I'm listening to it right now, and this is by far the most laid back i've been all day.
Agh! it's over! What a brief, fleeting sense of euphoria! Why hast thou abandoned me! |

Nice piece!
Coincidentally I was listening to a Tui this afternoon while walking the kids home from school. I love the transitions from chaos to bell-like tones. |
