Phase Locked Loop |

Has anybody ever created a phase locked loop module? Are there any schematics for such a thing? What chip is good for this? |

i've never seen a PLL module, though they are used in a number of ways, integrated with other circuits. the 4046 is a robust and versatile integrated PLL system. theres alot you can do with this chip. it has served [very well] as the clock for alot of ideas i have proto'ed..
and it sure is handy as an inexpensive micro-power VCO with very little external circuitry... the way thomas henry controls it in his SN-voice gives it very good range!!
there are alot of schematics out there.. for use just as a frequency follower look at the data sheet. |

yeah 'clock glide' could be implemented with one of these.
i was thinking of just that when someone here was asking about adding a little 'swing' to their drum machine triggering...
the idea was to slightly modulate the clock signal, and OR the clock and the delayed frequency from the PLL.. or soooomething like that?..
could be redundant in certain cases, but an easy sub for a glide circuit/ 2nd VCO- a 'dummy' following vco, like perhaps an addon for the SN-Voice

I made a weird 'tracking oscillator bank' using 3 4046 phase lock loops. The oscillators follow any sort of note that is sent in from guitar, keyboard, or whatever. The tracking is adjustable from almost instantaneous to up to 20 seconds to hit the note like a portamento. It can also be set to play notes at intervals above or below the input note, using a decade counter, turning into an arpeggiator. Finally it can be set to drone a note forever once it locks into the input note. It was inspired by the Boss Feedbacker pedal, but does so much more.
I plan on including a similar modification when I start on my soundlab so that I'm not just limited to square waves.
I can post more info if anyone's interested. |

I'm really interested in a reliable pitch to voltage converter for guitar use h-tone. |

I'd also love to see this circuit. I've been looking for a decent frequency follower for a long time.
Would you mind posting it?
Thanks |

That would certainly take my mind off Barberpole Phasers (temporarily!!!) |

I vaguely remember a sort of guitar synth made by a company called Clark Cabinets which used a 4046 PLL in it's frequency tracking I don't know if I still have the circuit. It also used a chord generator possibly clocked from a processed guitar signal - I wish I knew where to start looking! |

I hit the right pile of papers first time, it was Campbell Clark Cabinets, I will scan and post it this weekend - both sides of an A3 sheet. |

I've had that for years, I think they advertised in PE or ETI for a while. |

I have one of these. Have a look at p7 of the PDF - Freq multiplication. Interesting application and I've never heard anything quite like it as it sweeps downwards through overtones. Mine doesn't work too well at LFO freqs as I'd hoped. I do like how it slews when searching to lock to a note - IOW it's "faults" are part of its charm. It's one of those modules you can't fully tame and that's a good thing.
I just got one of these:
http://www.ear-group.net/model_28.html
which can lock to incoming clock. It works very well and is a cool rhythmic module. There's a couple of things about it I would have implemented differently (he forgot to call and ask my opinion), but still a useful and forward thinking module for sure. Dividers are pretty common but with a module like this you can go forth and multiply as well.
Cheers

Hi,
I have tried Scotts design, I built it without the divider (and not for a Fatman) and it worked fine.
I tried different places in the circuit as output and the most interesting sounds were found at the phase comp outputs if I remember correct.
I think PLL's has a lot of potential, try putting one in a feedback loop of a filter, add some dividers/counters or waveshapers etc.

Sorry sorry--
I've been on vacation for a coupla months; and my computer has no internet now (i'm using a friends). I'll snap some digital pictures and try to get them up online (just got back into town 2 days ago). Sound clips might be trickier but I'll see what I can do. |

I've got one living in the lower tier of my modular.
