Making web sites accessable |
 |
|
How do you make web sites more accessable to people who access them with tools like voice recognition?
This came up when I was discussing the relative advantages of a froum vs. a email list. One user who is now a member of this forum, uses such a system. He's got macros designed that work with his email client.
I'm interested in making the forum accessable to this technology, but I'm not sure what techniques to use. Thus, I'm opening up this forum with the hope that others may have something to share. Here's a quote from a message that was posted on the email list:
Quote: | I'm using some old discontinued software (Dragon Dictate version
3.01). Now i've build many macro's with it and it is still doing
exactly what i want, so i keep using it.
Maybe i'm upgrading to Dragon Naturally Speaking version 7 at the end
of the year, cause at my work i'm going to get migrated to a new
network/os AND accompanying speech software. I like to run the same
software at work and at home....
Now Dictate can handle all properly programmed windows controls (like
menu's, buttons, selection lists, etc...) directly. So that's what I
use in my macro's for the NM-list at the moment in Outlook Express.
Dictate can also manage the mouse, so when a control (link, button
etc..) is on certain coordinates (pixels from the top left, fi
125,320), i can write a macro to click on the control.
So when you can provide a hyperlink that is always on the same
coordinates (within a given screen resolution), i can handle it.
Dictate can't handle hyperlinks by itself, it doesn't interpret HTML,
it's active in the windows layer.
Is this information helping you to understand my problem and wishes?
Very nice indeed you are considering making it easy for me, it's
highly appreciated!
I'm going to post a patch on the forum now....see if i can work that
out:) |
Too bad that the links have to be at the same XY coordinates. This is hard for the web designer to control, unless he uses a fixed sized window. I avoid these because I like pages to scale to the user's window size.
Still, if the user has a certain minimum width, most of the stuff at the top of a page would be in unchanging positions, at least until there was an edit. Like, the electro-music.com menu items and the forum items are probably showing up at the same postion if the screen is wide enough. But what happens if in a few weeks of months we want to add the patch index to the forum menu, or we have an mp3 index to add. That will mess up all of the macros that are dependent on the XY coordinates.
I would think that version 7 is a lot more advanced than version 3. Maybe there are some improved techniques for web page navigation. Their web site says:
Quote: | You can navigate by voice in Microsoft® Internet Explorer, as well as in any Microsoft® Internet Explorer-based window, such as the Dragon NaturallySpeaking® Kelp file or Command Browser.
NEWER: Control the mouse by voice more easily
You can now control the mouse by voice in a variety of ways, for example, by simply saying “Move Mouse upper left” or one of many new mouse commands. |
Anyone? |

I had a look at the manual for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 7 (http://support.scansoft.com/manuals/download.asp?ManualsSelect=DNS) and navigating the web with internet explorer looks like a breeze. No mouse necessary. You can speak text links or say 'choose' and then the number for the link which is assigned by NaturallySpeaking. I don't think there is much that can be done on the designer's end except making sure there is always a text link in addition to linked images.
This is really neat. I'd get a copy if I had $200 |

Wow, I didn't find that link when I was looking there at first. Looks like you are right, but clicking on buttons, check boxes or pull down menus is also a breeze.
Thanks, Noiseusse. |

Thank you for pointing me to this manual.
I'm using DNS version 5 at work at the moment, and that version is already capable of browsing the web. But apparently not as good as version 7. Now i'm dutch and the dutch version 7 has become available just recently. Now i hear this stuff I am going to look at it shortly.
One thing that i do not like with version 5 is that if a page has many links, it takes a lot of time for DNS to render them all into voice driven commands. So it slows down the browsing considerably. This might be another consideration for webdevelopment, keep the number of links on a page a bit down.
Maybe i should also consider upgrading my web computer, but then i do want the G2 expansion board........ _________________ Grtz Wan |

After reading all this about Dragon, I sent an email to my father-in-law who is 82 and has very bad vision, and eye-hand coordination. This could be a big help to him. |
