My wife and I will be passing through Amsterdam in a few weeks, and we thought we would stay for a few days.

Unfortunately- our trip has been delayed somewhat.
I will know more details soon. Once I have that info, I'll get back in touch.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Still looking forward to this trip (whenever it happens), and meeting everyone.

You Must See the hortus botanicus

http://www.dehortus.nl/index.asp

A nice day trip.I visited The Dam in 2004.
Also the Ann Frank House.

And if 420 is in your vocabulary
The Grey Area Cafe
Oude Leliestraat 2
Amsterdam
http://www.greyarea.nl/home.html?agree=0

You can check who might be playing at the Melkweg
http://www.melkweg.nl/voorpagina.jsp

Or Paradiso
http://www.paradiso.nl/index2.php

Or Check out Steim
http://www.steim.org/steim/
and buy yourself his and hers Crakle boxes They are only 50 euro each and alot of fun.
A one hour train ride gets you to Brussells Where you can visit the
Musee Des Instruments De Musique
or The Music Instrument Museum.
http://www.mim.fgov.be/ Sorry you will have to translate this site

Brussells also has the atomium
This is a must see if you go to belgium!!!!!!!
http://www.atomium.be/HTMLsite/dyn/eindex.html

A new exhibit showing throughout the year 2007
http://www.atomium.be/HTMLsite/dyn/page.php?translation_id=91&info_id=&lid=3&

Which was closed for renovations when I went
Worth the trip though.
An experience I will always remember and never forget.
As for hotels in Amsterdam I booked ahead and rented a small efficientcy but no longer have that info ,you should try to book ahead.
In the meantime, if I come across the info I'll shoot you a P.M.
Have a great time and do come back ;-()

That's in The Hague (Den Haag), about three quarters of an hour from Amsterdam. It's where Rob Hordijk and c.s. lives.
At the moment there isn't much in display, but in Leiden there is an exhibition called 'Soundbites', where some of the instruments (like the modular Moog) are displayed 'in loan'.
The museum in Leiden is called 'Boerhaave'
http://www.museumboerhaave.nl/
Leiden is only half an hour away by train.

Anyway, if you are in our neighborhood (The Hague) we (Rob, Kassen, Kees, maybe Blue Hell, and me) surely like to meet you and your wife and have diner on the beach, if the whether will allow us...

That sounds great!. Even if the weather isn't good enough to eat outside, I'm sure we can find a place inside.

Is it easy to get to the Hague by train?
If so, would you PM me explicit instructions on how to get there from (and which train)?

if you go to Den Haag YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE MAURITSHUIS MUSEUM. Nowhere else you will be able to see the painting that Marcel Proust considered the most beautiful ever painted. You could judge for yourself if he was right Exclamation

We hope to see at least one art museum while we are there.
We will have basically 2 days, possibly part of a 3rd.

We are arriving July 3rd, leaving July 6.

How far are you from Amsterdam? From The Hague?

Good call Carlo! We have recently seen the movie "Girl with a Pearl Earring', which is loosely on the painting on the home page of that museum. Just how many art museums are in Amsterdam? And of course, the Van Gogh museum.
(Hmm, 2 days isn't going to cut it, with all that I would like to see.)

How do I convince my boss I need "more time" than I'm already taking? Smile
It looks like Brussells is about 1 hour away by train.
(and I will be in town 1 month before that event) Sad

About two hours and a bit, which wouldn't be a problem in a weekend, it is on working days though.

Funny how foreigners seem to know best what to visit here ... I've never even been at most places mentioned (not meaning they are bad suggestions, more like I could always go, and so it never happens).

That seems a bit optimistic to me for a 200 km distance (Amsterdam to Brussels), when I try to find a train I get 3 to 4 hours of traveling time.

try this for planning train trips in the Netherlands (or to Brussels).

Proust was right, BUT IF Vermeer would have looked over his shoulder, he would have painted 'View on The Hague' Very Happy

Wout

BTW if you go by train to The Hague, the Mauritshuis with some Rembrandt and Vermeer is at walking distance of the Central Station.

If you and your wife have decided about your plans, let us know.

don't worry Jan Wink it's always like that. I live in a city "crowded" with museums but I have not seen all of them even though there is people coming from all over the world to see them (and, as a result, there are, almost always, very long waiting lines in front of them).

It was the same with me. There were many sites of interest I never saw in my home state (same town Mosc is from ), until I moved to California. Now when I go back to visit family, we usually get to see something new each time.

That's why I once stayed home during my holidays and acted like a foreigner, who knows to talk Dutch very well. I visited all the sites in my town all those strangers do. I learned a lot, even about myself... Smile
