SEAMUS 2008 National Conference
April 3-5, 2008
The Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States is pleased to announce the 2008 SEAMUS National Conference, to be held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Any current SEAMUS member, and any U.S. citizen or legal resident may submit works to the conference.
This year’s conference is dedicated to pioneering American electro-acoustic composer Vladimir Ussachevsky, in residence at the University of Utah from 1970 to 1990. The conference will include performances of his later electro-acoustic works, including his delightful Colloquy for orchestra and tape, premiered by the Utah Symphony in 1976. Composers are invited to submit up to two electro-acoustic works with or without performers, works with video, installations, and other related works for consideration for presentation. Student compositions are encouraged. Paper submissions for panel discussions or paper presentations on topics concerning electro-acoustic music are also requested.
Composers and paper authors are requested to complete the online submissions form at www.seamus2008.music.utah.edu
for each work being submitted (2 maximum).
In addition:
Composers are requested to send by mail the following:
• A maximum of 2 works, with accurate timings. Preference will be given to works with durations under 10 minutes in length. Works longer than 18 minutes will generally not be considered.
• Scores and recordings (audio CD / video DVD), if available, of works with live performers.
• Audio or video recordings in CD or DVD format of any prerecorded audio or video, and any other files utilized to realize a part or the entirety of the work. Please identify CDs or DVDs as audio/video or data files, and identify the format of all files (including sound files). For adjudication purposes only, multichannel compositions must be submitted in a stereo mixdown, as well as on a multichannel data CD/DVD.
• A self-addressed, stamped postcard for confirmation of receipt of materials.
• A self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of materials, should they need to be returned.
The host institution will pay licensing fees through BMI and ASCAP. Neither SEAMUS nor the host will pay rental fees for performance materials. Composers submitting works will supply scores and recordings that are required for performance at no cost to the host institution or SEAMUS.
Paper authors are requested to send by mail the following:
• An abstract or complete article of a suitable length for presentation in twenty minutes. Suggestions for panel discussions should include a list of possible participants. All pertinent topics will be considered, but topics related to the analysis and performance of works by Ussachevsky are particularly encouraged.
• A self-addressed, stamped postcard for confirmation of receipt of materials.
• A self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of materials, should they need to be returned.
Please identify all materials with your name. The adjudication process will ensure the anonymity of all submitted materials. Please do not send originals; SEAMUS cannot be held responsible for the loss of materials. Submissions by citizens or legal residents of the U.S. who are not SEAMUS members are subject to a submission fee of $15 per item. All submission fees are non- refundable. Those selected for inclusion on the conference are required to attend the conference.
