Subject description: looking for any and all leads on the history of code generated music, from the past to the present

Calendar Event: January 29, 2015

Hey all,

I'm looking for any and all leads on the history of code based music. I am currently working on an article that is an "unofficial history" or "intro guide" to code generated music.

I'm looking for anything: from the early pioneers who made music through coding, to the wildest examples of people who are using the form today, from basic programs people use to make code generated music to the newest adaptations to music generating software.

Whether giving your own history of the genre or simply plugging acts and experiments you are into, anything is helpful.

I hope this finds you well and thanks in advance.

Mike

Hi Mike, welcome

Questions Shocked Laughing

Code based music ... would that include all music made with soft synths? Or generative music in general? or narrower, like a ChucK program, does CSound count? Or all of it? An analog modular patched up to do it's thing without user intervention, is that code?

Oh .. and one more question, why did you make your post a calendar item?

I'd say anything digital. But definitely more focused in the vein of programs like Max/MSP.

Why a calendar item: I messed up.

But thanks for the warm welcome. Smile

This has got to fit in there somewhere. Laurie Speigel started composing music on a computer at Bell Labs in the 70's. This was an experimental lab for Bell Telephone. She went on to create lots of electronic music and write software for creating music and early computer graphics. It would be really hard to give a short description of all of her music so here is a link:

I talked to her at the 1987 NAMM show in Los Angles. She was showing her Amiga Music Mouse software. She was very friendly and talked my ears off.

Chapters 17 & 18 in Road's The Computer Music Tutorial may be useful in this search. Smile

You definitely want to read about Max Mathews and the MUSIC-N family of languages, which were almost certainly the first. At least according to this Wikipedia page:
Quote:

Max is named after the late Max Mathews, and can be considered a descendant of MUSIC, though its graphical nature disguises that fact. As with most MUSIC-N languages, Max/MSP/Jitter distinguishes between two levels of time: that of an "event" scheduler, and that of the DSP (this corresponds to the distinction between k-rate and a-rate processes in Csound, and control rate vs. audio rate in SuperCollider).

I am sure that Roads' book covers that.
