I am very sorry to be delivering this unfortunate news. Scott's son posted the following message tonight to the Synth DIY email list:
Quote: | Hello I'm Oren Gravenhorst, Scott's son.
Excuse me if I'm breaking some sort of post etiquette but I'm a millennial who doesn't use mailing lists.
Scott passed away sometime during the night last night, I know that he was very active on this mailing list and mentioned it to me over the years, so I figured this would be a good place to relay this very sad piece of information.
-Sincerely,
Oren Gravenhorst |
Scott was well known to all of us that use this forum often or visit the chatroom. He was always friendly and happy to help. I owe so much to him for all of the help that he provided over the years. This is hitting me hard.
Scott shared a lot of his own projects here on the forums too. Mostly digital DSPic and FPGA stuff. He started off with DIY synths almost 40 years ago by modifying his Paia Fatman. Of course, he shared the schematics so other could benefit from his knowledge.
He was also a great musician, but was often a bit hesitant to join the rest of us in making crazy noises. He had a masterpiece that many of us have played often. I will share a version of it here in case you haven't had a chance to listen:

at this moment I'm still out of words. Scott was always active in chat, often helping others, pointing to ideas or having fun commenting on everything.
I'll miss him. Goodbye Scott. _________________ Weblog! |

Wow... man, that sucks. I've spent quite a few hours chatting to Scott in IRC, he was a really good guy. Skilled with electronics, code, and making music. |

Oh, sad news.
He embodied the spirit of DIY forums, sharing his knowledge and helping others.
He will be sorely missed.
Gratitude. _________________ .: james :. |

Scott and I had quite a few exchanges over the years - I sold him several of the FPGA audio DACs that I designed, back before such things were commercially available. He was a fast learner, an autodidact and creative mind. He will be missed. |

oh no , how sad , i chatted with Scott a lot in EM chatroom and back in 2001 i used his circuits for add on ADSR etc for my first proper diy project, the Paia Fatman synth.
Scott was a well of electronics knowledge and always ready to help a stuck diy'er including me on many occasions.
I'll be looking for you when im out with the Maksutov 180 telescope Scott !!!!
Thoughts with the Gravenhorst family.

I will deeply miss Scott. He was hugely influential on me in my early 20's. I loved hearing about his experiments with FPGA's and Karplus strong synthesis, and he was an endless source of help for me in my exploration of electronics. I feel bad as I hadnt reached out to him in a few years and now never will be able to. Scotts memory will live on though. |

So long Scott. We had some laughs on the chat back in the day. We fell out in recent years but Scott was a good friend when I needed one.
I'm lighting up a fatty in your honour, old man

Wow, I just came across this announcement. Very sad.
I haven't been as active on the site in recent times as I would like to have been. Scott was indeed one-of-a-kind. I had some facinating discussions with him on the chat. If I thought there were two sides to a story, Scott would always have a third. _________________ --Howard

He wrote this to me in June 2013 after my solstice set
Quote: |
I was astounded by what you played.
I got all teary eyed while you played.
So I downloaded your posted MP3 and it happened again - tears streaming down my face.
That was just awesome. Marvelous. Beautiful work.
Thank you SO much for giving us that performance.
|
Will listen to it tomorrow in his memory.
Thanks for the note, Howard. I need to check in more often. <3

Jan told me the news a couple months ago, but Im just seeing this thread today.
Very sad to loose Scott. He was always such a helpful and sharing person. Enjoyed so many conversations with him in the chatroom over the years, stream jams, and his own music. Sorely missed.
As Rob mentioned, I hope he is enjoying his return to Jupiter. _________________ ElectroCasa |
