Hi folks,
I wonder if anyone has some advice...something is seriously wrong with my music setup...it started when I accidentally unplugged my USB hub that is connected to my MIDI instruments and Tascam audio interface.
Next time I tried to practice, nothing worked.
I unplugged & reconnected my devices, rebooted, etc.
Since then, Ableton has not been able to see the MIDI devices and the I/O button is grayed out. This means that Ableton will play my previously recorded clips, and it shows the MIDI instruments in the Preferences tab...but Ableton isn't seeing them. (it does, however, blink when I hit a key, which means that MIDI info is getting thru.)
I would love to find a simple solution to this--one that doesn't mean I have to buy a new copy of Ableton One Month before electro-music.

Hi Laura!
It's probably not an Ableton problem but check a few things.
- I assume you are saying Ableton cannet see any of the items normally connected to the hub. Did you check in Abletons settings to see if the items are there and just need to be enabled? You may have to do this before being able to assign tracks to them...
- If not, try removing the hub and plug each item in, one at a time and see if they each load in Ableton ( try the audio interface first). FYI you'll need to plug an item in THEN start Ableton as once started Ableton may not see changes to its I/O stuff till its shutdown and started again. Not sure what OS you're using, but in Windows the apps revert to the standard PC sound card driver if the external audio interface becomes unavailable. If you can get all the items to load by themselves, try reconnecting the hub - you may have to do it on its own first so the computer can install its driver for the hub. Remember that if you need to reinstall each item you will most likely have to re-enable it in Ableton....
- If still no joy, can you try installing the items on a different USB port?
Let us know what you find....

Hi Dave and thanks!
what happened was I had accidentally pulled out the USB cable that connects to the Hub. Thus, disconnecting ALL my instruments. (I don't think any of them were on at the time, not Ableton either.). And then I plugged in a portable hard drive in that port & did my backup.
Later when I tried to play music, nothing was seeing anything else. So I did all of those things you suggested. Restarted, rebooted, plugged in, switched cables, ports....Nothing was working so I finally reinstalled the drivers for all of the devices.
After about 5 hrs I managed to untangle the whole snarl and get everything migrated from my desk computer to my music laptop where it is now going to stay.
What a nightmare!! People say that USB is 'plug & play', well I don't know what universe that is in. In my universe, USB stands for 'unable to setup, bitch!!!" I still can't figure out what happened and how to prevent it from happening again, except "DO NOT TOUCH THAT USB CABLE EVER."

What OS are you using?
I still find USB on XP to be very dodgy. Sometimes windows just loses track of what was plugged in to each USB port, and can't seem to sort itself out. This is the exact opposite type of behaviour to what you would expect from a Universal Serial Bus. But, hey, maybe it's just me.
Windows 7 on the other hand knows exactly what's going on. You can hot swap anything to another USB port and have it back in seconds.

Not my Windows!... and it's a Legit copy of Windows 7 64 bit that was installed in December!

Nor mine... but I only experience that when working with Abe. Could just be a bug, but it sucks nonetheless.
