So I took PHOBoS' illustration for PHUNGUS (it's around here somewhere) and put it into Virtual ANS, which output a sound file which I then put on a track in Reaper DAW, then I put a plug-in called JS: Spectrograph Spectrogram Meter (Cockos) on that track and it generated the attached image. I'm so surprised at this result I had to think for a bit if I might had gotten a contact high off of someone today...

That's a pretty nice picture. I think I'll try the little plugin myself. Very Happy

neat, so you converted the image to sound and than back into an image. Does it sound like anything ?

You can find a couple of nice spectrograms here

and here's the image

which was posted here

Howard it is a neat app, just save a pic file into the VANS project directory and then load it. There are a bunch of drawing and editing tools as well as effects, and undo and redo functions- which all work while in play mode. Exclamation I've used images posted here recently (Waves, PHOBoS, the planetarium things, etc) Neat stuff. The PHUNGUS is angry and in a hurry in VANS.

PHOBoS, perhaps I could have explained that better. I rendered the VANS output of your PHUNGUS pic as a wav, which I imported into Reaper; the pic I attached above is the Spectrograph plug-in image rendering of that wav Below is an MP3 of that track.

What confused me was that sound could be used to render anything close to the original pic in such a manner. I saw "PHOBoS" and thought "what the hell did you just do?"

I'll have to play with it a bit; so far it looks like the Reaper 'graph plug-in generates snow for the 2 and a half highest octaves, and further distorts the image (crops, etc.)

The first image is probably distorted because it is displayed exponentially in the frequency range (up to down). In the second image it is linear. As far as I can guess. The noise at the top of the first image is a mystery to me...

Edit: Actually, it could be silence, or very low level noise.

Aphex Twin famously hid a spectrogram of his face in one of his tracks, I think it was on the Windowlicker album. He used Metasynth if I remember correctly.

I don't have any experience with VANS but you're right, it is rather interesting that the image is recognizable in the spectrogram.
With that last image you posted I think I understand why though.

Thanks Robsol, I somehow avoided all knowledge of all of this.

This is Rule 191 (of the Rule images on here somewhere) in VANS
