Brood X Cicadas, eastern Pennsylvania, June 2021 Subject description: some videos with sound & still photos
I did do some strictly audio recordings of 17-year Brood X cicadas here in eastern Pennsylvania, but the mic in my Nikon D850 turns out to have excellent directional properties for filtering out distant lawn mowers, chainsaws, airplanes, and other motors, that I am just posting the videos along with a few still photos.

Strange sound .. very noise like ... is that because there are so many?
Indeed. Sometimes different groups hit different pitches and you can hear the beat frequencies. My son took me lake kayaking Sunday. While he fished I "rescued" around 40 of these by scooping them with my paddle onto the boat. Two made it to land. The rest just flew back into the water after they dried off, except for two who just walked off the damned boat.
