Nord Modular DSP expansion - What does it actually do? Subject description: What does it actually do and why buying? |
|
|
Encoreelectronics says:
Quote: | “The Nord Modular DSP expansion board has the same functionality as the original out-of-production board. It adds 4 DSPs to the original Nord Modular instruments. Installation is extremely simple. No soldering necessary. It comes with mounting hardware.” |
Does:
• Gives full polyphony of 32
• Open for more complex patches
Doesn’t:
• Give more multitimbral (still 4)
• More than 32 polyphony
Question:
• Can I then break the limit of 100 % in patches and how far can I go? (200%?)
• Does it do more, than I mentioned?
These days I’m asking myself, is it worth buying this DSP expansion? I haven’t done it yet, but I have considering doing it many times. But when I look into the archive of patches on this page, then I realize that nearly no of the patches are over 100 % and this is probably because it was unnecessary to have this upgrade.
• Has any of you brought this DSP upgrade and ever got use of the extra DSP power? Or have it just been excess? |

I do not think the expansion board ever affects whether it is possible to use a given patch at all. What it does is to increase the amount of polyphony you can have on complicated patches, especially if you have patches in more than one slot.
Increasing polyphony from 15 to 31 probably doesn't make much difference. Increasing it from 2 to 4 would make an enormous difference if you care about playing chords. So it depends on what you're trying to do. |

Hello Ark and thanks for the quick answer
Ahh, that makes sense – so the DSP expansion board is more for people who like playing chords
• What do you mean by increasing the polyphony from 15 to 31? Isn’t Nord Modular g1 polyphony with 32 voices as standard?
I thought you had these 32 voices, and then you could choose how you would split those 32 voices into the 4 part multitimbral? (and with DSP expansion you had 32 voices fixed on each multitimbral)
I found some information Wiki:
Quote: | • Minimum 4 voices expandable to minimum 8 voices
• Maximum 32 voices depending on patch complexity |
Question:
This may some like a very beginner question, but I’m curious! Wiki says that it depends on the patch complexity. Which modules inside the editor actually eat the voices? |

Oops -- I was talking about the G2 -- I don't know if the G1 behaves the same way.
On the G2, you can have up to 32-voice polyphony provided that there's enough DSP power available to handle that much polyphony. The G2 has four slots, each with a patch, and you tell each slow how many voices you want. The G2 then figures out how many voices it is capable of giving you by considering all of your patches together and estimating how much DSP power you need.
For example, the first patch you see when you switch on a G2 with its factory patch set is called "Welcome G2." That patch is capable of only 15 simultaneous voices on an expanded G2, so if you ask for more than 15, that's what you get.
If you have that same patch running in two slots at once, then you can get only 7 voices in each slot, and that's on an expanded G2. Without the expansion, it would probably be 3 or 4 voices.
Again, I don't know this translates into the G1, but I'm guessing it's similar. |

Hi,
I was looking for an expansion board, but given the prices, I'm now thinking of buying a second G1 instead. So I would have a spare one.
Is the expansion board the same as the original board or is it different ? |
