Ever wanted to see what it looks like in an IMAX projection room? - Well here's your chance (and a plug for a Sci-Fi film festival at Birmingham's very own IMAX theatre!!!)

I don't like to write too much so you can just see the pictures;

and another (mosc I still can't work out how to add multiple attachments- as the procedure is too confusing)

The top reel is for your left eye, the bottom for your right- as this feature is in 3D

look at the size of those reels Shocked

edit- the film comes from the middle of the reel- so you never have to rewind them!

My friend Scott is holding a festival of Sci-Fi films at the Brummie IMAX theatre including;

1. The forbidden Planet
2. 2001 a Space odyssey
3. Alien

....and 2 more films that I've spaced on the names of Embarassed

I met a couple of years back the neice of Bebe Barron. I am trying to get hold of Bebe to see if she will do a lecture- its a long call but worth it Smile

The Forbidden Planet and 2001, although not IMAX films, are brand new prints- so the quality should be stunning.

I'll keep you posted on the dates. Meanwhile, here's the Birmingham ThinkTank link;

forbidden Planet is a great film with a great score. Meeting Bebe would be a great privilege indeed. Wow...

I love Forbidden Planet. Actually all those films are great.

I was amazed at the size of the IMAX film. No wonder it looks so good. Imagine taking those camera on Everest or under water! What an undertaking.

when I lived in Boston, MA I used to go to the Mugar Omni Theater at the Museum of Science. It was great Exclamation

Yes, those IMAX Dome's kick the crap out of the Giant IMAX 2-D projections. I always liked when Leonard Nemoy introduces the sound system, and the screens get lit up from behind to reveal 13,000 W of speakers located *everywhere*.

Unfortunately, I don't think things will get really interesting until IMAX goes digital, so the cameras become manageable.

At the pace that technology is moving, and the pace homes are being fitted with home thaters, it's a nice prospect that I might have a personal IMAX dome that fits in my pocket before age gets the best of me. Maybe they'd call it...."iMax". Very Happy

One time in the early 80s I was on a job interview at General Dynamics in San Diego. The guy interviewing me said he saw my background in electronic music and thought I'd enjoy seeing what goes on down there. Turns out, he was the inventor of the Imax projection and sound systems. He took me on a tour of the San Diego Imax theater. It was pretty interesting. This guy also was a member of the team that designed the Atlas rocket. He said the most significant things he's invented are secret. He was a really nice guy. It kind of ruined my image of evil scientists and engineers that work on weapons systems. Turns out, some of them are all right people, and artists at that.

How weird is it, that my cousin lives in Birmingham, AL, USA, and also works on IMAX theatres? He has traveled to other countries for work, so you never know...

Also - I am originally from Richmond, VA. The science museum has an IMAX theatre there, and they designed the theatre entrances and exits in such a way so you could look in and see the projection room while you were waiting!
