Absolutely
In the early days e&mm's sister publication published a really cool rack mount modular fx unit too with all kinds of delay, filter and modulation goodies on board. I wish I still had those schematics. I saw one of these on ebay a while back. I think it only sold for £50 or so (I didn't have the money or space then). _________________ ACHTUNG!

Hi folks,
I know that this thread is kinda old, but since I'm new to the electro-music forum scene, I thought I'd post a follow-up to it.
If you're into abusing CMOS X-OR gates, I highly recommend Craig Anderton's Pulse Width Multiplier. It was published in Polyphony several decades ago, but I got Craig's approval to post the article on my site:
http://web.pdx.edu/~rfahl/img/capwm1.gif
http://web.pdx.edu/~rfahl/img/capwm2.gif
If found an old post of mine that describes it well:
-------------------------------------------------------------
I tested it by running two sequenced VCOs into the audio inputs and a
sequencer cv and two LFOs into three of the CV inputs. Depending on how I
had the inputs set, I got something that sounded like aluminum cans going
through a meat grinder, to swishy, swirly phasey effects which reminded me
a lot of the more screwed up programs in my Lexicon Vortex. It's really
hard to compare to any module or effects processor I've heard so far. It's
something between a fuzz box, a phaser, a pulse width modulator, and an
80's arcade game violently self reproducing. Sexy and evil at the same
time.
---------------------------------------------------------------
It's currently not in a cabinet, but when I get my new boxes assembled, I can post a sample or two.

A good thread gets resurrected many times!
But I can't get any kind of response from either of those links.
And I'm itching to do some EXORing. "Sexy & evil at the same time" I can't imagine a more inviting description for a sound. (Maybe because it describes me so well! ) _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

No,
It just sits there.
Edit-
It's okay, it worked. I just had to leave it for 5mins. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

First of all, a long overdue Thanks All for the kind responses to my first post months ago.
Hasn't anyone noticed that the oscillators in Ray Wilson's WackyZany etc. http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/analogsynth/YOUR_FIRST_SYNTH/YOUR_FIRST_SYNTH.html are the same type under discussion -- Schmitt Triggers -- and that the Wackiness oscillator is voltage controlled? I've extracted the circuit fragment and uploaded it here:
http://www.geocities.com/richardc64/circuits/wz_osc.gif
(How do I make a pic appear within a post?)
Eliminate S1 and D1. R11 sets the initial frequency. Replace it and R15 with a fixed high value resistor. Put your CV on pin 1 of the Zaniness pot, repeat 5 times, varying the RC vaalues, and voila, CV metallic noise.
But wait: is it necessary to vary all 6 oscillators to get pitched noise? Maybe varying only 2 would be enough. See the microlarge TR-808 Clone here:
http://xlargex.xl.funpic.de/
Note that no xor is present. The outputs of the oscillators are passively mixed.
(And as long as we're reviving old threads, the filter in Ray Wilson' WP20 Mini-synth is a simple, single supply VCF.) |

If it's your own pic just click add attachment and browse to your pic. If it's from someone else's site I think the convention is to paste a link to the site.
Great link BTW to the XlargeX 808 Clone! _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Notice V or I are not a factor in the equation. A lower voltage will mean a lower current...but, well, lower voltage - the cap doesn't have as far to go.
This is what makes expo portamento applied to CV do its thang - same concept. If you play a low A and a high A, it takes the same amount of time to glide as it does if you go from low A to low C. As an aside, linear glide will take a longer time to go to the high A then the low C, but there's usually an op amp or two involved there.
Cheers,

There is huge cool knowledge in this thread and it deserves a good bump.
It is also good for Lunetta knowledge. (Tagging for keyword searches.)
This forum is awesome. Lots to find. _________________ ==================
