Rack frames Subject description: Best UK suppliers for enclosures??? |
|
|
YoYo
Can anyone point me towards a good source for enclosures
-- especially 19" rack units (raw 19" 1U enclosure is what I'm really after)
-- but also, 3U frames (for making modulars) (Paia Frak Rak is the best value I've found so far..)
UK supplier would be best but not essential.. -- Maplins have them cheapish around £30:
Farnell & Digikey have such unfriendly searching engines that its really difficult to tell if they have something suitable.. (..they're also not known for being particularly good value..)
BEST to all of you..
(oh, yeah, the project I'm looking for these for is to make SSL Bus Compressor clone as detailed at www.gyraf.dk -- serious hi-spec audio racks DIY ace!) _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

Best place is the boat anchors in evilbays used test equipment, not only do you get a quality rack enclosure but free hardware and components.
I got a North Atlantic 3U box awhile back for peanuts which was a mechanical work of art.
Do have to watch the postage though.
I have a spare 1U here 12" deep, here in London, has no rack ears but would be fine with a schaeffer plate across the front.PM if yo're interested.

Hey, Bugbrand, that Gyraf stuff is really tempting. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

THANKS!
Yeah, I should document the build on my website - especially where I tracked down suitable components - other than a few special parts the Gyraf SSL is a pretty damn straightforward project.
(but this then makes me think that I've got to once again reconfigure my website so as to add new sections -- argh, so much of life is taken up with maintenance...!...)
By the way - there's PCBs available for the Gyraf SSL from www.audiokitchen.co.uk - only £18 inc P&P. (I usually do my own PCBs but think its worth getting these - its quite a packed PCB and the price is not too high) _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

I'm going to bbe building two - a friend who has a great studio has been on at me for a while to help him build one (..well, actually, probably just build it for him, though he'd like to help.!.) - so he's tracked down a pair of the proper vintage DBX202 chips - I'm just going to go with the easy&cheap THAT2180 VCAs so it'll be really interesting to do a comparison between the vintage and replacements.
Finding a suitable (small size is important for 1U rack) ppm meter has been a bit of a search, but Farnell have these ideal ones: http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=7758162&N=401
(although i'm looking at alternatives on Ebay too - meters can be pretty ££££ - certainly the pro Sifam ones, cripes!)
Ah yes - also of interest -- www.cncpanels.co.uk have done frontpanels for the Gyraf SSL before and can offer very smart 3mm anodised alu front panels with all holes and lettering for only £25 inc P&P (seems like a good price!)- he sent me a FrontPanelDesigner layout of it - so it'd be possible to modify the design a little (eg for a different ppm meter) _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

I had www.cncpanels.co.uk make a MidiBox SID panel for me. He does good work and it's a lot cheaper than Schaeffer. I paid less than $80 USD for a 3U panel. The Schaeffer quote was over $150. |
