this is a short example of a max/msp patch I built to create scales that divide any interval in any number of equal steps and that, at the same time, creates a timbre with consonant partials (somehow proportional to the steps of the scale it is playing). I use additive synthesis with only 8 partials. this example was created dividing a 12th (an octave, 1200 cents, + a perfect fifth, 701.955 cents) in 12 steps (1901.955 cents/12=158.49 cents each step). Relating timbre and tuning is a very interesting subject

the tunings that are in use in the west nowadays were born after the examination of the harmonic series then they were arranged, modified, tempered etc. to satisfy the needs of musicians, instrument builders, theorists etc. so there is a close relationship between timbres and tunings. that's why when you try alternate tunings it is hard to find pleasing timbres to play with. this patch is a very basic try of relating timbres and tunings. rhythm is completely another story IMO. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

you know Jan, there is a trick my max/msp patch is monophonic so I opened Logic Pro and max/msp thru rewire. I played the first track, then recorded it as audio, while listening to it I played the second one (that afterwards I recorded as audio too) then I mixed them adding some reverb do I deserve a wider recognition or what _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Ahhh! Hey Howard! We called this cowelling way back in the early 80s. As methods goes, it worked best when writing the parts. True cowelling tended to rock the boat during impro. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
