| midiman (m-audio) used to make a 3x8 switcher. You might find one of those new or used. |

Since you only need 1-in and 2-out you might consider a midi merge... then you don't have to flip a switch:

I have a JL Cooper Nexus 3 x 8 midi switcher that is very nice however I am not sure if it is made any more. Amazingly, a quick online search revealed that such devices may be hard to find these days -- used to be a snap to find "midi splitters" and "midi switches". Time marches on!
In addition, I have a switch that I built with Radio Shack components. I use it to select which keyboard I will use as my master controller. I am using a rotary switch and DIN connectors. Very simple -- completely passive, and it works fine. The midi spec calls for optical coupling however my little black box works ok without anything other than wiring the rotary switch to the din plugs. It would be possible for me to replace this simple switch with the midi merge device above -- I just haven't had the need.
If you like DIY projects, you might want to build your own simple switch, though by the time you purchase parts it may not be worth the little savings over purchasing a production switch or merge. (Back when I built my switch, MIDI merges were PRICEY!!) |

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
A midi merge is no use unfortunetaly as I need to be able to cut off all midi messages from the connection not in use.
I have tried midisolutions and they informed me that they have a unit in design and it should be available in a couple of months.
I will have a search for midiman and see what I come up with
Cheers

This might be a crazy long shot, but the old PS2 mouse connectors for PCs were 5 pin DINs, weren't they? You might be able to find an old version of one of those keyboard/mouse (and possibly monitor) switches that enable you to use the same mouse etc for two computers and just use the PS2 sockets (if PS2 uses all of the pins that you want for MIDI). If you just want to reroute the connection, then the same box should be usable as a 2-to-1 or 1-to-2...
I'm tired, so there is probably something wrong with this train of thought.

Just that it were the old keyboard connectors
And IIRC all five wires were used for the kbd, so that could work I guess. _________________ Jan

Ah! I never had a PC with a large DIN myself, so I was a bit unsure. Thanks.
