I guess price is the biggest thing. THe HS80's were good, but not the best in that range. The Alesis ProLinear aren't that bad either. Do they have to be powered or passive?

they need to be active...
regarding price: my credo is that i will pay more if there is a substantial difference in perception/quality...

best regards

Well, the MSP5s did sound very nice for their size & price, unfortunately for them during my test they were in the company of many more (expensive) speakers that outshined them.

However, if you have the chance, find as many of these as you can in shops and listen to them. When they're right next to each other is best, since you really get a clear perspective of how they sound relative to each other (relative is my only comparison, since I've never owned anything beyond headphones that could be considered "FLAT".)

Sorry if I'm jumping around your question, and I wish it could be more scientific, but a flat monitor in my room to my ears might not be so flat in your room to your ears.

So I after my experiences and trials, I went ahead with the Madisound kit.

Ordered it late laste week, and parts came in yesterday. Fully assembled now, and currently being broken in. My initial impression is very much "Wow!". Sound is good. I took pictures through the build process, so I'll make a write up of the whole thing, especially after they are broken in, and I do some tests and tune them for my room.

I posted my article (as it is thus far) about my experience and details of construction of the kit.
