Welcome to the SuperCollider Forum :) Subject description: a place to learn, create and share! |

to the SuperCollider forum!
SuperCollider 3 is an object-oriented language for sound-synthesis and digital signal processing. The nature of this forum is to educate those starting out with the language with an emphasis on using the language to create music. However due to the nature of the beast one must understand what they are doing first! So ask as many questions as possible so we can tame this colossal animal
Useful links; (if you have some useful links or pointers to getting the Linux and Windows builds of SuperCollider, please feel free to post them in this thread- thanks )
http://supercollider.wesleyan.edu/
This site contains the very latest build for Mac OSX and should be your first port of call for getting up-to-date builds of SuperCollider.
Download the tar.gz file depending if your Mac is PPC or Universal Binary (Intel)
Unstuff the file
drag and drop the file to your applications file
locate the SuperCollider application
double click on it and away you go
www.audiosynth.com/
Audiosynth,com is SuperCollider's homepage. It contains lots of useful info and links to various related sites.
http://sonenvir.at/downloads/sc3/ (PC build)
download sc3-build2
unzip to folder of residence
double click on "msi to redistribute supercollider" -- windows must be up to date to use this!
then run psycollider --
that's it
no python, no nothing. very easy
This is Dave Cottle's email address. Dave is a lecturer at Utah University in the States. He has an excellent manual available. But you must email him to obtain this as the manual is being constantly updated.

Quick tutorial;
To get anything working, the 'localhost' server must be running.
It's highly recommended that one reads the help files located on the toolbar at the top right-hand side. Locate one of the tutorial files on the right of the screen that pops up and go from there. You only have to click on these (between the '[' and ']' signs - the text too is underscored with a grey line) to activate them.
The patches work by double clicking between the '(' and ')' symbols. This way the patch is highlighted and is started by hitting 'enter' (but not 'return'). The enter key can be found on the right next to the space bar (on a Mac that is).
To stop the patch running you must press the apple key (command button) and the full-stop button '.' (or 'period' button to those on the other side of the pond!)
I am using the name 'patch' here for the sake of simplicity. The actual name for it is a 'class'- reading the tutorial these names will become more apparent, and they should be learnt as soon as it is possible.
At electro-music.com there is an emphasis on making music and learning while having fun. Therefore I urge all those involved to send examples of their patches as mp3's so we can spread the word of SuperCollider to all those willing to try this dynamite freeware.
Don't be afraid to ask questions either- many of us here are beginners too
Extra links;
If you have some good links and advice, please don't be afraid to add it to this sticky window. But please keep it as simple as possible as SuperCollider is very deep and there is a lot of information to absorb.
Best of luck, but most of all,
ENJOY! _________________ ACHTUNG!

Supercollider website update |
 |
|
The up-to-date location for Supercollider is here:
http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/downloads/
The link to Wesleyan should probably be removed; their build system hasn't bult anything since 2009, yet Supercollider is in very active development. |
