Supercollider NOOB faq Subject description: ...let's start from the beginning... |

1. What do i need to start supercolliding on my evilest of wintel machines?
2. i've never done any text based stuff, apart from csound back in the day (i wrote a bars worth of monophonic motif, thought it was neat but lack of realtime action/building a GUI concerned me so i gave up)
3. i'm all for coding music, providing it eventually works in realtime. do i have to code the GUI as well?
4. how easy is it to find patches/stuff to reverse engineer?
5. SILVANO TOGNIERI LIVES! |

Go here: http://sonenvir.at/downloads/sc3/sc3-win/

SuperCollider is way different from csound, much more interactive. No score is needed in SuperCollider, and sequencing and synthesis are all done real time. (There is a non real time mode for the synthesis engine that does use a score, but that isn't the primary work flow.) For sequencing, you run routines or event streams on a clock, usually TempoClock because you can (surprise!) change its tempo.

SuperCollider is designed for real time use. My web site (link below) has some audio clips that were done entirely in SuperCollider, all live, no editing.
For GUI design, you'll want to look closely at the SwingOSC classes. SwingOSC is the only GUI framework supported in Windows, as far as I know. There is no standard GUI layout, so you will have to design your own.

Examples can be sometimes hard to find. There are lot of simple examples in the help files. Also some examples on the swiki, http://swiki.hfbk-hamburg.de:8888/MusicTechnology/6 . I've posted some more complex examples, with commentary, on my web site, the tutorials page http://www.dewdrop-world.net/sc3/tutorials/forums.html -- note that the GUI code is for Mac, I haven't checked to see if all of it is translatable to SwingOSC. I also have links to some tutorials on that page.

Well, he must not really exist because he doesn't really turn up on Google... (only 1 entry, not really enough to count)

he was a troubled soul and never fulfilled his potential to blow away the music industry as we know it... _________________ there's no I in TEAM, so let's all act as individuals instead |

Thanks!
I see you're from Birmingham. Did you make it out to the SuperCollider symposium? It was a blast. Had my first ever balti on Saturday night.
