Webjay - M3U Playlist Creation and Aggregation |
 |
|
I've been thinking about Stations recently (and still think that Gideon ought to support them, but whatever) http://beepsnort.org/ - latest article... and a reader commented about Webjay.
It basically lets any user create M3U files, from the Webjay station portal, save them, promote them, from any deep-linkable MP3 file.
http://www.webjay.org - corrected
Check it out - this has been a key thing, I think, missing from the online music scene since the demise of MP3.COM. _________________ music

Parsing together an .m3u from a list of files is no big deal. You can do this with a Filemaker web app, mysql and php, perl, shockwave or whatever. One way to do this is setting up a database where assets and metainfo is entered. You can then have a webinterface for building the playlists. I did this some years ago and also set up a pdf engine that would send playlist metainfo to the listeners.
In theory a playlist containing assets from all over the net can work well. Some playback engines can get into trouble if the files have different compression schemes and obviously the main problem is asset accessibilty. Distributed assets will mean that some assets will be temporarily inaccessible or accessible at too low bandwith from time to time. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Yeah, its no big deal, but aggregation is almost always some dude just getting up and saying, 'I'll do it!'... and your other concerns are valid and acceptable for the big purpose of getting organized, curated content to the listener.
Playlists anyone? _________________ music

Hey nothing wrong with shameless self promo but
Shame on those who use listings for playlists or radio shows just to promote their own music. Geez. I remember visiting an ES links page of radio shows and playlists and so many were just links to individual artists, not various artists. Of course, I didn't bookmark it so I can't link to it now.
Pissed me off because I wanted to find curated shows by hosts who play other people's music . Listings to such playlists were dwarfed by artists posting links to their own music. So I gave up scrolling for the real deal.
Yes, Jeff, playlists are what I miss from mp3.com days. (still on ampcast and besonic though). That's how I started off Headtones Radio. I figured out how to use .m3u files and deep links after mp3.com's demise. Glad to see the idea further developed with webjay. Thanks for the post. _________________ Power On,
