This is basically just what I do too, but I am rarely sitting in front of the computer when I write music.
The great thing about thinking the composition first is that it is not in real time which means it is far more effective to think the parts and test various concepts and models than playing around on a keyboard. That can take hours instead of ... well.. far less time. Testing sounds is also more effective than in real time.

I use the piano roll exclusively, and input my music note for note by mouse. The bennefits are numerous, but it took many years to get to where I am now with it.

Sigh, I fear I am too old to lean that many new tricks. I'm having enough difficulty trying to refresh theskills I once had. Sad

I've actually compiled a large list of fascinating features I would love to see in future versions of Sonar, and would have handed them over to Cakewalk had I not wisened up and decided to keep them for myself and hopefully be able to have my own sequencer/DAW developed one day.

oooooh, if you're going to do that (have developed) you will need a lot of money. A cheaper way to go might be to adapt Rosegarden to your needs as it is open source (I think) and most of the work is done.

Using Sonar 3?

Not yet. My hardware will be in chaos for the next week or so. When all is reassembled I'm going to upgrade.

That too is my preferred method. But my skills, limited in the first place, and diminished by atrophy and age have me tweaking score a whole lot more than I would like.

On the other hand if I am stuck for ideas, I find it profitable to let my fingers loose at the keyboard to do some thinking on their own and then steal their ideas.

Compared to Sonars 1 and 2 (even XL), Sonar 3 is more like Sonar 5.

No. This passacaglia I mentioned is the first piece I have done in many years. All I have is the completed open score. So it will be some time before it becomes a realized piece.

Well said, Cyx. I couldn't be more delighted. Robert is a very old friend. We have spent endless hours joyfully shooting the shit on topics we cover here. For one reason or another, we've not been in contact much for a while. I'm very happy that's over.

It pleases me to no end that the kiddies find this place boring. How better a passive quality control feature. Wink

Yeah, the people here are great, but relatively few. There've been a few recently who have taken to participating, and it has added to the quality of the discourse here in each instance. It's great.

Which reminds me. Has anyone seen our resident Italian as of late?

Thank you Howard. I too am very happy to be back in contact, my friend. I hope I can contribute constructively to your worthy endevor here.

Carlo is on a trip and apparently can't get to the internet very easily. He should be back in about a week, I guess. This place isn't the same without him... Sad

You already have... Smile

You might be interested in having other people realize your music. Jeff Harrington recently posted a score and a MIDI file of a new string quartet. I took a shot at it. I had a good time and I think Jeff got a charge out of it too. See: http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-1401.html

Also, Carlo did a piece I took a hack at. See: http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-1019.html

Thank you for the offer, and I truly am flattered. But the only thing I have at this time is the passacaglia and I'm really hot to do that myself using the Vienna Symphonic Library. All 240 gigabytes of it were delivered today. Tomorrow I start building/rebuilding my hardware to run it. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it Very Happy

Thanks, I think Wink

Was up way late reading the manual on VSL. Looks very cool. I'm going to do some tutorials and a review on VSL as I work my way through my first project. But I'm going to start by doing a tut on building your own DAW. Look for it on the How-tos in the next week.

Wo... welcome bachus! What librar(ies) did you get? And what format? THe Giga one or the EX? Also, are you going to try and run Sibelius with it?

I've been drooling over it for a year now and am just not quite ready to spend the $$$$$$... Wink

I got the "Orchestral Cube Pro Edition" and the "Performance Set Pro Edition."

I got Giga 'cause I'm a nerdy DIY PC computer type.

I compose in Sibelius but except for "preview" listening and editing I don't use it to generate realizations of music. Sibelius' "AI" expression is way too crude for my tastes. I'm going to use Sonar to drive Giga.
