Line headphone mixer Subject description: Lots of dials - why DIY mixers drive you nuts |
 |

Just thought I'd share a pic of a custom job I did last week.
The quest was to make a headphone distro mixer to take 16 line inputs and route them to four independent output busses. Also space was at a premium and limited to 2U.
So, things only just fitted in with standard parts - 70 knobs and only a few mm clearance all around. I think it was thanks to learning off DIY modulars that I was able to design this without too much complexity. _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

not many places care to tailor a headphone mix to that degree for four players. they must have a nice installation. how many hours did you put in that beauty?

Yeah, actually most who would want to would probably just use some software mixing -- still, its nice to have in hardware and makes me think of doing my own custom killer mixer / router - plenty of aux sends for complex routing.
I budgeted about 12 hours for design and build - that's a good thing about mounting the pots on the pcbs -> design one simple input channel and then replicate 16 times over, add a bus strip and a board of four output mixers and there you go...

drills & dremels! - I have to chop the end off every pot and had been using a hacksaw - damn that's time consuming and kind-of tricky - but now I've started using a dremel cutoff tool and they fly off.!. _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

Very nice mixer. 12 hours is "cheap" for a device like that.
Yes indeed the Drmel is a cool tool. I use mine on almost every project.
I buy the reinforced cutoff wheels they last many times longer than the standard ones. I had some bad experiences with the standard wheels breaking up in a bunch of very sharp splinters flying around at very high speed, one actually penetrating a beer can. _________________ Stay Cool

That sounds terrible!
Did you lose any beer?
BTW, great job on the mixer Bug. I'd probably spend months on something like that. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

No beer was harmed in this experiment, at the time of the accident the can was fortunately empty. _________________ Stay Cool
