Can't use a virtual midi port in the "MIDI Setup" Window... Subject description: The editor doesn't detect any virtual midi interfaces. |
 |
|
Hi there, first post here...
I have a question for you NM wizards. I want to control some of the modules in the editor with an external hardware controller. That device sends NRPN data by default, but I've used MidiOx to convert it to CC. I know this part is working fine because I can successfully control different other programs.
Now my problem is that whatever midi virtual output I use in MidiOx (I've tried Midi Yoke, Maple and LoopBe), after I define the 'in' and 'out' ports in the MIDI Setup window, in the editor, and click on "Apply", I get a "Looking... Still looking..." message.
I've tried running the editor in other compatibility modes, but it didn't help.
Any idea?
julie
p.s I'm using a Micro Modular with 3.03 bios and software. |

So lets get it straight...are you sure you do not open the midi ports that the micro editor wants to use from any other program, midi-ox or any other?
You must leave these 2 ports to be used solely by micro editor.

And then you'd need another physical MIDI out to send the CC's to the synth, they must not be sent to the editor. Or did I read something wrong .. I don't get the need for the virtual port ... _________________ Jan

Thanks for the replies.
G2DREAM: I don't think I do. I believe that midi-ox only sends and receives data when you specifically select a channel. Anyway, I don't have any problem with the connection to the editor (pc-in&out). I can set those connections fine in the midi setup window.
Blue Hell: Ok so let me explain what connections I've made so that it's maybe more clear:
Electribe OUT > Midisport 2x2 IN > Midi-ox IN > (change of signal from NRPN to CC) > Midi Yoke OUT > NM Editor IN/OUT? (I'm a bit confused at that point because I would want to connect the output of Midi-ox to the input of the editor, but I only can select from a list of inputs in the IN picker. Anyway, whatever I choose in the settings window, it doesn't change anything to the problem).
So, the idea behind outputting from Midi-ox to a virtual midi channel is that I don't need to reroute the signal from Midi-ox back to the physical midi interface, and then into the MIDI IN of the MM. I did test this method though, but it didn't work either. It seems that whatever way I configure the extra in/out slots in the NM Editor, it's not being detected. |

My bad, I had the wrong channel selected when I tried the MidiSport 2x2 OUT> MM Midi IN method (yes, it can happen when you try millions of ways to fix a pb..). I still don't understand why I have to use an extra cable just to go back to the MM. What are the slots in the Midi Settings for, then? |

The two MIDI cables from the MM to the PC are strictly for editing only, you can not use those to transfer user MIDI data to the synth. Only the synth's own MIDI in port can be used to receive user MIDI data (like NoteOn/Offs and CCs).
The other slots in the MIDI settings are for your 2nd, 3rd and 4th MM, you can edit up to four NM / MM machines from one editor.
But you got it working now _________________ Jan

You can't sent MIDI messages to the editor. Try sending them to the NM instead. |

Ok ok ok, it's all crystal clear now. I wish I had seen the phrase "You can't sent MIDI messages to the editor." in the manual.. (I don't think it is mentioned at any time)
Thanks all for the clarification..

Clavia's docs are not as clear as they should be. |

Yet they are much clearer than they could have been _________________ Jan

"(I don't think it is mentioned at any time)"
Neither is the phrase "You can't use the editor to make stroopwaafels".
If it had said that you CAN send MIDI messages to the editor then it would have been more interesting. |
